Ok, I need some good "not pregnant" fibs to throw people off the scent...

I literally *just* got my bfp. Going to the doc for confirmation today.

But...DH and I are going to Margaret River for the weekend with some friends for a good mate's 30th birthday, in about 4 weeks.

Margaret River is one of the wine capitals of WA, as well as having cheese factories (and I love soft cheeses, which everyone knows) and a lovely coffee place. Soooo many temptations, and avoiding them not only will be hell, but being out of character for me may well get people wondering if I am pregnant or not. Well before we really want to make it general knowledge.

    Anyone got some good deflectors?

Saying that you are on antibiotics will be a good one to stay away from the wine but something the avoid soft cheese hmmmm not too sure about that one!
Coffee will still be ok but just limit yourself to 1 a day and make sure that its not very strong!!

    Congrats again!!

And you are so strong for not wanting to tell right away, all our friends and family already know! We cant keep secrets at the best of times!!

Do they know you're trying? Just say you can't have that stuff when you're TTC, you don't hafta tell them you're actually pregnant already!

When I was in your situation I just went with 'we are trying to get pregnant so I am living healthy in preparation'

It may not work for you if you don't want to give that sort of info away but I found it worked beautifully as it was reasonable as an excuse and it gave people a feeling of being *in the know* which put them off the scent a little

Antibiotics are probably the easiest option , you could also try:
    - It's so hot, I need some water first
    - It's a health kick
    - I'm having a month off alcohol
    - I'm having a month off sugar (less obvious than just alcohol, but harder to maintain )

If all else fails, hold a glass of wine and pretend! Your DH can drink it surreptitiously

say you are doing a detox and couldn't believe you got your weekends messed up! or that your doc said you have to lose some weight to have a baby (not sure what your weight is like tho) so you've been banned from 'junk' ie wine and cheese!

or you can say you had some food poisoning the day or two before and your tummy is really just super sensitive atm.

Tell them you've got the worst diarrhea ever, some kind of parasite they think. Dairy and alcohol make it worse. No one will question that! And it isn't all a fib.

Or the AB's line works well.

with the wine, you could say you have to stay away from alcohol pending tests on your kidneys? (just might need to "play" on kidney region pains every now n then)
    good luck!

Soft cheese is actually ok, as long as it's made in Aus, which all those little cheese places definitely are!

Feel free to ask your care provider if you like but our laws state that all cheeses have to be pasteurized, which kills listeria.

As for the wine... Wow, so tough. I do not envy you... I love wine and going while pg would be so tricky! That's not helpful for you at all sorry!!

I struggled a bit with this one as I didn't want to lie (personal choice) So we went with subterfuge!

I have done the covert drink-swapping with Dh before... That works when you are in a party or something where things can get a bit lost and confused itms? If you're tasting wines... Spit. It's not rude - just say you don't want to get hammered at the wineries and then do some drink swapping at wherever you are staying!

Hope that helps... Good luck and congrats!!!

If you do proper wine tasting you aren't supposed to swallow anyway. I wouldn't worry about making up stories or anything like that. I'm sure that once you are all there no one will really notice if you aren't eating what you normally eat or if you aren't drinking as much anyway. I've always thought that if you actually 'protest' too much, that it makes people questoin you more closely than they would if you just went about your business.

    Heheheh, thanks girls.

The wine is actually an easy one for me, as I don't typically drink it - I'm a spirit/liquer/port girl. Thus rarely drink very much anyway, so hoping they don't really notice.

The cheese thing is interesting, everyone says to still avoid soft cheese (I loooove camembert) but tbh I figure if it's fresh out of the fridge and just unwrapped it should be ok. I might just stray towards the tasty bitey cheddars that I'm also fond of.

I went with the old designated driver excuse but I guess if you're on holiday that wont work!

If they already know you're not a wino, just spit everything out like Trillian said, its what you're supposed to do anyway!

But most of all, don't make an excuse unless somebody asks, otherwise it just draws attention to it!

    Good luck!

PS- SO jealous of your trip! If you love cheese you should make the trip to Tassie if you haven't already, its cheese connoisseur heaven not to mention its just so pretty!

I agree go with the spit option and say you're not a big wine drinker. And if you are already showing by then (i got horrible bloated at the beginning) try wear something flowly or say you had a big lunch to avoid any questions asking if you are pregnant.

    BTW congratulations

CONGRATS! I know how you feel. We had my BIL engagement party when we found out with our first.
I went with the 'I have been really run down with a virus so on antiobiotics'. This worked perfectly for those who noticed I wasnt drinking. Otherwise I had lemonade in a champagne glass and no one knew the wiser!
Have a great time away, Margs is lovely, my dad lives there

Congrats - I agree with Trillian - unless you protest too much most people wont even notice.
Usually when people are busy drinking the rarely will notice whether or not you actually take a drink - you could also carry your drink into the kitchen area, garden or loo and tip a bit out
