I have two cats and in the last few weeks one of them has been weeing in the house and I don't no if its a big coincidence but he/she keeps weeing on ds things. First it was the changetable mat then the cot mattress ds had been asleep on on the loungeroom floor when it was really hot for 2 weeks so we were all camping under the a/c and tonight I came home to the blanket that ds lays on for floor time screwed up and wet.
I have a sneaking suspicion i no which one it is though, my little female cat is gorgeous and i love her to bits but she's not affectionate and a rarely pick her up coz she's really awkward and when i do she goes rigid and tries to get away. My big male cat however is my baby. He's big and fluffy and cuddly and before ds was born i would hold and cuddle him all the time whether he liked it or not (most of the time he didn't lol) but now ds is here unfortunately the only time i have to give them my undivided attention is in bed at night and even then I'm so tires i just want to sleep. So anyway i think its him, basically coz when i say my little girl is little i mean little, she's tiny and these wees are massive there is not way she can have that much bodily fluid lol
both of them are desexed, and i no male cats can still 'spray' regardless but this is actually urine, it stinks and there's heaps of it.
Is it possible he's jealous of ds getting 99.9% of my attention? Are cats even that smart? That's the only explanation i have for it, unless like i said before its just a huge coincidence it happens to be on things that ds lays on all the time.
can anyone shed some light on why he might be doing this coz I'm stumped
And how can I get him to stop?
Oh and btw they do have a litter tray which is cleaned all the time so its not like they don't have anywhere else to go.
I'm not a cat person, but yeah, cats are that smart. Most animals are. They are 100% emotional and cannot reason. So it sounds like you have a jealous cat who's peeing on your DS's stuff as a way to either mark his territory or scare the newbie away from his mummy. This is why it's recommend you transition animals to the new way of doing things before baby arrives. It's really no different to a jeolous sibling stealing or damaging baby's things.
We had similar behaviour in a dog once and she was put on hormone tablets to sort her out - it worked. You may want to talk to a vet about it. Sometimes valium can help calm them down. Otherwise, you need to start incorporating the cat more into your lives.
An animal behaviourist may be able to give you some ideas - maybe there's something on the web.
otherwise, if you can't give the cat/s the attention they need, maybe find them another home.
There is a spray you can get that emits a scent into the air (that humans can't smell) to calm cats down. I think it emits a scent similar to that which a pregnant cat emits, which calms the surrounding cats. Your vet should be able tp help with something
Thanks tash, I might go talk to the vet tomoro and see what he says. I couldn't get rid of them, love them wayyy to much, I do give them more attention now ds is starting to do his own thing and is happy to play in his Walker or have tummy time. It also depends on when DF is working to, regardless if DF is home and occupying ds I make an effort to pay them attention
Thanks hotI- I have heard of that spray, can't hurt to try thank you
The spray is called Feliway - you can get a diffuser that plugs into a power point, and also an actual spray to use on soft furnishings etc (but not on the actual cats!). We've had a few pee incidents here too. One thing to get checked is that your cat doesn't have a UTI - the first pee incident we had, our female cat peed on the couch and when I took her to the vet she had a UTI and the vet said peeing on the couch was her way of telling me something was wrong.
Also with the urine stains you need to use an enzyme to completely remove the stain, otherwise the cat may reoffend - or the non-peeing cat might do it too. Apparently Biozet washing powder is good, but for stuff you can't put in a washing machine eg the mattress, there's a spray called Urine Off specifically for cat urine (they also do a dog version) you can get it from pet supply stores, it's a black spray bottle. They recommend you use this spray first before you wash the items with anything else. It seems to have worked for us with our couch covers.
Regarding the feliway, it is expensive if you need it on an ongoing basis. I bought it from an Aus eBay seller so that I had an Aus plug-in to use (it was around $70 I think for the plug-in and one refill, a refill lasts for a month), now I am buying the refills from a US eBay seller and it worked out to be AUD$90 for six including postage. If you want the seller's names just PM me.
I haven't read all the replies so I apologise if I am repeating anyone
When my DS was born, one of our cats (we have 2) peed in our bed and one of them (or both) kept pooping where his toys were. It doesn't happen much now but occasionally we'll find a poop in DS' room.
And like you said, they had clean litter boxes all the time!
