My 7yo has it quite badly. I've been treating it with Daktarin Gold, morning and night, from Tuesday to Friday and it was slowly getting better. He's been at his Dad's for the weekend and his Dad has been using Chemists' Own brand anti-fungal - morning and night (but I think it should have been 5x a day because it's not the gold stuff).
He has a spot on his arm about 5cm round which is getting better slowly. But the three spots on his torso are worse. And the one on his elbow... it looks awfully painful and has grown from about a 20c piece on Friday to about 6cm round and all over the elbow when I saw him tonight.
I'm taking him to the doctor tomorrow...
Does anyone have any good-news stories about ringworm? What did you use to treat it? How often did you treat it? How long did it take to go away? And (apart from grog) how do I get "over" it???
My brother had it Div. He needed a prescription cream to clear it up. With the cream it cleared up in about a week. It was much less angry within 24hrs though.
We have used Lamisil (Athletes foot and fungal) It worked well. Prior to that we used Resolve/Tinea - it was ok - had to be applied 2x a day but we kept having flare ups.
Bloomin horrible things - We all ended up with them...
DS#2 ended up with one on his head that he didnt tell me about - it was quite big and he ended up with a bald patch ! aaargh
Didnt matter what I did - seemed to take ages to get rid of them - alot better once we used the Lamisil.
Both Lach and Ash had it at the same time once. I am pretty sure we just used resolve as well. They finally got over it, had a couple of flare ups which they got over too and we've never seen it again since.
My DD had it and we didn't realise it was fungal (looked more like a contact allergy type thing). In the end, when I took her for another opinion (because it had got quite bad, was weepy in one spot), the dr told us to use an anti-fungal - and (pay attention, this is the magic part) - she had to slather it on thickly over the affected area just before bed, then wrap it in clingwrap (which was easy to do because it was her leg, you would neeed to get creative with sticking it down elsewhere on the body). It's some technique that is used commonly and it's all about allowing the maximum amount of the therapeutic element to soak into the skin. It was *amazing* how quickly it worked. HTH
My experience about 2 years ago now with it ended badly with the two eldest needing oral turbanifane (sp?) to treat it. The hair was where M's started (and he ended up losing half of it) and I know now that if it gets in the hair follicles then nothing else will get rid of it.
Lamisil (which is also turbanifane) isn't recommended for under 12's generally. I've had mixed advice from different pharmacists. Some say no way and others say it's OK as it's generally a short course and topical. The GP's I saw also wouldn't prescribe the oral meds either and we had to go see a paediatric dermatologist. It can be toxic to the liver which is why they don't like to prescribe it but the specialist will weight up that risk. If you find that it isn't healing or is spreading then don't pussyfoot about with it because there is a HUGE waiting list to get into the specialists. Even with crying and begging I had to wait 3 weeks for an appointment when the initial wait was going to be 3 months!
Be excruciatingly careful about hygiene (I know you are anyway but be even more so ATM) because they spread easily. There is a two week window from contact to lesion developing so keep that in mind that more can pop up when you think you are being careful. Kids wrestle or do cute things like fall asleep in the same bed *sigh* but it's bad for spreading them.
I still use canestin rinse in the laundry and a long hot cycle for bedding and towels. Sorry not quite good news but it did end well once we broke away from the idiot Dr who kept fobbing me off.
Call me if you need (I'll go get the phone out of the car ROFL )

Well it turns out to be impetigo not ringworm. It's really really bad. Strong antibiotics and loads of Betadine. I feel ill when he is screaming while I try and get the scabs off, and then again when I have to do the betadine. I'm nearly crying. Hopefully it will heal up soon.
Yep home from school. With my Dad. At least we just need to keep doing what we are doing in terms of infection control - have managed not to get any on either myself or DS2 for 10 days, so if we just keep it up we should be ok I think.
It's just awful.

Sorry to hear it's impetigo, that's rotten. I had a really bad case when I was in high school, it should resolve pretty quickly once you're treating it. Would a soak in a warm salty bath help with dealing with the scabs?
The antibiotics are working wonderfully, and Betadine is his new friend lol. The warm salty bath definitely helps to get the scabs off. He's not so painful now, but the first time we had to try and get the scabs off.... well it took nearly an hour of him absolutely screaming, me in tears... knowing that I had to cause him pain to make him better. It was just awful.
It's a very bad case of impetigo which will probably need 2-3 weeks of antibiotics. I feel just awful, but so glad it's going to get better. WHat on earth did they do before antibiotics???
