DS has reflux (14.5 weeks/11 adjusted) - he has been on Zantac 3x's/day which has given him a great deal of relief. However, last week he started to spit it out so that it ends up on his chin, in the folds of his neck and on his clothes. As a result it started coming back (very fussy baby - screaming 45 minutes after putting him down - the classic signs). The pediatrician had also giving me a script for Losec (spelling?) and so I decided to give it a try - the compounding chemist told me that unlike the Zantac, the Losec only requires a single daily dose and it's banana flavored. Well, that all sounded good but DS spit that out too! I couldn't believe it - it smells yummy.
I called the chemist and he told me that I need to put the syringe further back in DS's mouth (I don't put it in that far). He also told me that he could make a vanilla flavored bottle for me (another $65).
Any advice/suggestions? Right now DS is sleeping in his swing as the upright position is the only one that works when his reflux is bad and I'd much rather he have proper sleep in his cradle.
Any idea when the reflux should start going away on its own? I hate giving DS so much medication.
It's a reflex for them to push stuff out of their mouths with their tongues at that age. Try putting the syringe further into his mouth so that he can't push it out. Put it towards the cheek so that it doesn't squirt down his throat. He won't be able to spit it out then.
Every baby is different, but DD's reflux settled down once she was able to support herself sitting upright.
DD is on Zantac too. She's ......... 2 days older than your bub. wow, cool!! hehe.
Try putting the syringe diwn the side of his mouth. Between the cheek and gum.
You need to put it in a fair way. Also try cradling him so he's tilted back. Gravity should help the medicine go down.
How much is he on?? DD is on .23ml every 12 hours. But she's been complaining alot so i'm thinking about ringing her surgeon to see if she needs a bigger dose.
I find that with DD I put the syringe in towards her cheek and she seems to take it a little better.......... and I know this sound strange, but she take medicine from the nurofen syringe so much better than the panadol syringe. The panadol one has a bit of a pointy thing on the end and the nurofen one is just smooth so maybe that's why?
I wish he took the dummy - that would be perfect - but he literally spits the dummy...he also has been refusing a bottle (of EBM) for some time - he's just not into anything that's not me which is kinda a PITA. I'm going to try some of these other ideas though...this has completely disrupted his naps and he's so tired, you can tell by just looking at him.
A little trick that has worked with both my little ones is to put the syringe back as far as you can and squirt the medicine then pull down a little on the bottom lip preventing the mouth from closing properly this sort of forces them to swallow.
My DD is on zantac and she hates it!! I know it sounds mean, but I drop a little on DD's tongue to make her get all upset and start crying, then I squirt it down the back of her throat in bits so she has to swallow it!
I used to put the syringe right at the back of her mouth on the cheek but she would spit it back out. It is nasty tasting stuff!!!
Try giving it in little bits not all at once?
