    Transition?

Looking back can you tell when Transition was for you during labour?

I missed it, lol. I have read in threads about the signs of being in transition and people saying that they knew when they were. But it didn't happen for me!

I was waiting for the pain to get worse and it never really did get as bad as I was expecting and then before I knew it, it was time to push. So where was that whole transition bit?

Do you remember it in your labour?

looking back with DD's birth, and J's birth just recently, there was a point i got to when i just couldn't keep my eyes open. i had to shut them, and just listen to what was going on...whether or not that was because of the gas or transition, i don't know, but both times it was right before i started pushing.....so i guess that was my transition stage.....but everyone's different i guess

I don't really think I knew at the time, but looking back for me it was about the time when I said to my midwife that I needed to get off the bed in the birth centre and either get in the birthing pool or get her to give me some gas She had the bath ready and I never ended up needing the gas

With DD1 (hospital) I got really panicky and overwhelmed in transition.
    With DD2, (hospital) I don't remember.
DD3 (home water birth) I remember clearly thinking "I CAN'T DO THIS ANYMORE!!!" and then being ready to push.
DD4 (hospital) I remember again saying "I just want to be done, PLEASE let me be done!" and then they broke my water and I was ready to push.
DS (home, in water for labour, GREAT labour!) I don't remember transition. I couldn't believe I was 10cm already!

I definitely knew I was in transition. I'd been comfortably labouring while sitting in a chair and it suddenly wasn't comfortable any more. I thought I wanted to move so got on the birth ball. Nope, didn't like that. I tried standing and leaning over the bed. Nope, no good either. Then I just thought bugger it, I'm getting on the floor. I got down on all fours and the midwife rushed to get a mat for me. That wasn't right either. By then, I felt I needed to go to the toilet. Once I was there I realised I didn't actually need to 'go', but that's where I stayed. I'm so grateful for my midwife who was happy to follow me around the delivery suite.

I think sometimes it can be very quick. I had a prolonged transition with DS - we both got distressed - and shorter with DD. I don't know if I realised it at the time as I can barely remember it. Very very fuzzy.

With DS1 (now almost2) I remember very clearly the change from it being about 'me' and the pain of the contractions to it being about the baby and getting him out safely... I stopped saying "it hurts" " I can't do it" etc and started just saying "baby baby baby"! I also remember one huge contraction that changed from being quite localized to a full body thing, with that my waters broke and it was all action!!!

With DS2 (now 9wks) as soon as we got to hospital the midwife closed the door and everything changed, I can't really explain it, again it went from painful contractions to a full body and mind shift... He was out 11mins after we arrived!!

Oooh goosebumps from remembering!! I love revisiting my boys' births <3

I vomited, got angry at DH for saying the same supportive words over and over , screamed out for an epidural despite wanting a drug free birth and said 'that was it, I couldn't do it and wasn't going to do it' - as in give birth I was tempted to pack my bags and leave the birth suite! I had an epi followed by a massive show then my OB did an internal and found I was 9cm, a stones throw from fully dilated

I don't remember much about DS's labour as I was zonked out on the oxytocin drip, the gas, pethidine, and the really strong epidural (they turned it up too high after I'd spent an entire night with it having slipped by 4-5mm and only working on half my body) and 35+ hours of labour with little sleep), but I do remember one point just before they started telling me to push I had the sudden though "I want to hop in the shower, I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to have a shower." I just never said it out loud as I was only just coming round after sucking up a huge lungfull of the gas lol

I have no idea with my first two, but with Ashton I was more in control and I felt my contractions change from feeling like they were in the front to in my lower back top of the butt area. I also remember feeling really really hot and demanding a pedestal fan, be placed in the room. I did wonder at the time if I was going through Transition. I got the pedestal fan and Ash was born about 10 mins later as I asked for my waters to be broken. As soon as they were broken I had to start pushing and he was out a in a few pushes.

Heaven, I could have posted this exact post after I'd had my DD!! I never thought I was in transition because even though I was in alot of pain and the contractions were every 1-2mins and very strong, I still thought I had a few hours to go before pushing (as I'd only been in labour 7hrs before pushing stage started) and yeah, I expected them to get heaps worse!! I was managing them quite well....... and when the MW said "you are almost 10cm time to push now" I was like WHAT???? LOL

I thought I would have been like "omg can't do this etc" "i give up" kinda thoughts but nope, I had kept going and never panicked or anything!!

Looking back, absolutely! At the time it was the only time I panicked. I felt like I was going to throw up and after 36 weeks of spew that panicked me so then I ended up teary From memory I also got quite cold.

I have no idea with #1. When thinking about it now with #2 I think I might have an idea about when it was with him.

I didn't know or it wasn't like what I read about. At one time I threw up and thought that was it, but it wasn't. Later, I got tired and needed to lay down, but that was just exhaustion and not transition. I imagine it may have been when I was on the loo and started roaring. Tha's when they told me to move to the bed for pushing but I didn't want to. In hindsight, I wasn't emotionally ready to push yet but got on with it when told to
