    Baby Hammocks

We currently have a nearly unused bassinet from DS2 and am considering selling it for a hammock instead, just wondering what others opinions and experiences have been. DS2 was a shocking sleeper and still is, couldn't be put down without waking up and i know not necessarily this baby would be the same but really want to get this bub into a better pattern from day 1. I'm not into full on routines or anything but i firmly think encouraging a certain sleeping pattern does help in the long run.

I used an Amby hammock and it was an absolute lifesaver! My DS1 would not sleep anywhere but in my arms during the day for the first 10 weeks of his life, he loved being held and jiggled around. We bought a hammock and the first time I put him in it for a nap he slept for 2 hours! I didn't know what to do with myself .

I tried it for DS2, but he didn't take to it at all . He ended up sleeping pretty well in his cot though.

I used it for DD's day naps too and she slept much longer in it than in her cot. So all in all it was a winner for us

My biggest thing would be about SIDS and safety. I read on another article you need to be careful with there chin touching there chest that i might comprimise there breathing ability. Any feedback on that topic would be great

Where abouts are you? (on iPhone I can't see if it says!) I have an amby baby hammock I was going to sell... My sister used it for her #2 he loved it but neither of my boys have used it - haven't even tried it tbh as they both came straight into bed with me. Don't have any SIDS info or personal experiences to share about it I'm afraid but let me know if you're interested....

Hammocks sold in Aus should most definitely be SIDS approved. The hammock needs to have good ventilation, be assembled and used correctly (there was a recall on hammocks in the States last year due to a couple of infant deaths however both were due to incorrect use and assembly) and really shouldn't be used once baby can roll over or pull themselves up.

That said, they are great! We used a bassinet until DD was 10weeks then moved her to her cot. She was a terrible day sleeper from about 5 weeks and loved being in the sling, in a cradle position, so we thought she'd sleep well in a hammock. We bought a Hushamock hammock and she loved it. I wish we'd bought it earlier as she was mobile (rolling, etc) before too long so we didn't get to use it for as long as I would have liked.

DD only had her day sleeps in the hammock as, I'll be honest, I wasn't comfortable with her being in it all night. I have no idea why! Maybe because I'd become quite attached to our movement monitor which I couldn't put in the hammock. But she had great day sleeps in it and we'll do the same with our next baby.

A close friend from my MG used an Amby hammock for months for all her daughters sleeps. Now, it unusual with a hammock but her daughter ended up with a really bad flat spot! She saw a chiro for several months to help correct it but it was terribly flat. I was sure hammocks were meant to be good for their head shapes but not in my friends daughter's case. Something to keep in mind or research.

Dannim, we're in SA which obviously doesn't make it easy to get to you, but if you decide you're interested PM me and I can send you pics and work out if it's practical to send it to you

I just brought my second Natures Sway hammock (they are NZ made) first one unfortunately got stolen, we found it priceless due to me being in hospital so long after Ethan was born he was use to being held to sleep, the swaying of the hammock copied the feeling he got while inside me and feeling of being held... he slept extremely well.

Actually there are no Australian standards for bassinets or hammocks and Sids & Kids don't reccomend or approve any of them.
    ยท
    FAQ | Sids and Kids
HammocksThere is no Australian standard covering the use and manufacture of hammocks for baby. While we are not aware of any research on the
safety of hammocks or guidelines for their use for babies, we are aware of case and injury reports documenting a number of hospital admissions of infants following a fall from a hammock.
Babies sleeping in hammocks are at risk of incurring a falling injury. Babies should not be left unsupervised in these devices as they are not designed as an infant sleeping place.
My DD slept in an Amby hammock in our room and i will use it again if we have another child. Love it.

the baby hammock was the main thing i wanted to hire, for a few months. Couldn't find any baby equipment hire places that had baby hammocks.

i've met so many people who rave about them.

i wish i'd NOT bought the plastic baby stuff i bought (when pregnant) and instead bought a baby hammock. hindsight is a wonderful thing.

so much baby stuff, IS a "try it and see" thing. it's hard to commit to the pricier items, when you don't know, until you try, whether your bub will love it or not.
