Depends on what sort of gym / services are offered.
In SA a typical 'low end' gym membership yearly rate would be $225. The average 12 mth membership would be between $700 - $900 and the creme de la creme in SA costs around $2,500 per year (but that gym in SA has tennis courts, massive swimming pools, all sorts of theraputic massages you could imagine in addition to the usual classes, weights, cardio equipment etc).
Mine is $4.50 each time, they don't have memberships.
There's another I can go to that's 27 a fortnight but it closes at 830pm which is useless for me, that's the time I'd be arriving
our local gyms are $600 for a year, everything (classes gym creche) included, and $700 a year (same as above, but with a swimming pool, but you have to pay each time for creche)
my gym membership is $7.95 per week (lots of competative rates in my area) but my personal training bootcamp which i get heaps more out of is $200/month (or $50 a week)
I went to my local gym to get rates: no contract, no joining fee $12.50 a week and $20 a month for crèche. Or there's a 24 hour gym. Not sure if they have a joining fee, but it's no contract and $8.75 a week.
Hey OP, I've probably joined 4 or 5 gyms in my lifetime, and only ever stuck with and gotten the full 12 month membership usage out of one, which is Fernwood Women's Health Club. Yes, its probably not the cheapest gym in my area, but the setup, service, facilities and staff are organised in a way that actually make me go and want to go!
So I think price is relative to the type of facilities and services you get, and whether or not you are actually motivated to go!
In answer to your question, basic membership at my Fernwood is about $20-25 a week. My membership includes a weekly Personal Trainer session and is about $50-$60 a week.
