Small car accident at 21 and half weeks

Hi all,

I guess I'm here for some *extra* reassurance...
This week on Monday I was driving home from work & had a small car accident. Car impact was to the front of my car at no more than 30-40kms / hr as traffic was at a stop & cars rolled into each other. It was front impact so my front bonnet was damaged. The sudden accident caused my seatbelt to pull on my stomach (more uterus) quite tightly. I did feel a bit of a slap/sting on my belly, kind of like whiplash... I was in a state of panic for my little bub so I drove myself straight to emergency who put me through immediately (at the Northern Hospital where I'm booked in for bubs) & attended to me immediately. The did a scan of bub who was moving around quite normal & had a normal heart rate. The placenta was normal, still perfectly attached & at the front. They kept me over night to monitor me for 24 hours, checked everything again the next morning & it was all still fine. I continued to have a bit of stomach pain which every1 believes in muscular, but it's only a slight pain & not getting worse.
At my 20 week appointment bubs heart rate was mid 145, but I'm concerned that it had dropped to 135 when they checked in the hospital on Tuesday. Midwife counted using her watch which I've never seen them do b4 so I don't know how accurate it would have been?
Has anyone known of a situation similar to this? Car accident / whiplash & everything turning out to be fine?
I know all doctors told me bub was fine but I can't help but worry! My next OB appointment is on Wednesday, they'll follow all this up but until then, any stories of reassurance?

i had a small car accident going 50 -60k at 36wks pregnant all impact was my side of the car (driving) and then we got thrown into a gutter and blew that tyre i had the whole get thrown around and everything, never went to hospital nothing i just had a nurse present at the scene she said if bub was still moving and no bleeding then everything will be fine, which it was that baby is now 3yrs old

i figure the more we panic the more stress we cause ourselves, so please stay positive im sure everything is going to be alright

I haven't had an accident whilst pg but sounds like all is OK. Just keep an eye on bubs movements and anything out of the ordinary (spotting).

hey love. i don't blame you for being scared/worried. but do remember they are pretty well cushioned in there so not too much worries them in that regard. big hugs! ox

I had an accident at 32 weeks with DD2 where I was rear ended and my car was pushed into the car in front of me. It was a big impact as the woman that hit me wasn't paying attention. I went to hospital where they put the trace machine on me to monitor DDs heartrate and kicks. Both she & I were fine.

DH & I had another accident when I was 30 weeks pregnant with DD3. He pulled into the middle lane as a woman from the far lane decided to do the same thing. The impact was all on my side of the car but it wasn't anything major, it just felt like a dodgem car! Both DD3 & I were fine

Thanks everyone, with each story I do feel a little better...

I haven't felt baby move a lot yet, I've only been feeling butterfly's and I'm almost 22 weeks. I found out on Monday my placenta is at the front, so I think this may be why? I hope I start feel more defined movements soon!

Lisa- I also had all those sticky things on me monitoring heart rates when I was admitted in hospital Monday. My heart rate was up at 130bpm so I was surprised once mine had calmed down to 105 bubs was also lower than I was expecting at 135bpm. I was told not to worry as anything between 120-160 is normal.

I had something similar happen to me today, however there was no impact. I was in the car with my mother who hit the breaks suddenly due to someone breaking suddenly in front. Would have only been at 30-40kms. I am annoyed at myself because normally I put the seat belt below my belly but this time i forgot and I cant remember where it was sitting.

The seat belt did pull across my belly firmly, but it didn't hurt, wasn't super tight and I had no pain, cramping or other ill affects or anything afterwards. I haven't been to hospital as there was no impact, and I still feel the occasional movement from bubs. Should I be on the look out for anything that's a warning sign? It's hard to track bubs movement because while I can feel it as I'm only 20 weeks and the movement still isn't regular but getting the usual fluttering and occasional movement now and its 4 hours later.

My husband tells me not to worry but it's hard not to.

Sorry to hear you both had car accidents mummytash & lolpigs It must've been a nasty shock.

I have asked my ob before how safe bubbas are in there and he said that you would have to severely hurt yourself to affect the baby. Going by the advice I think that you will both be fine, if not a little rattled. Just take it easy and see your ob so that s/he can make you feel better and check on bubs. Maybe bring the appointment forward or call them to ask your questions. They are always ready to help, especially if you are worried. That's what we pay them for afterall!
