3D/4D Ultrasound - Umbilical Cord draped around shoulers

    Hi Everyone,

Im new here and its my first time post so if i do anything wrong sorry lol..

I went for a 3D/4D Ultrasound today and bub had the umbilical cord draped around her shoulders..it wasnt right round her neck (kind of like wearing a towel over your shoulders) but I didnt like the look of the positioning it was in. It was of course a non diagnostic one and Im only 23 weeks. The Sonographer didnt say anything bad about it and had a little joke but I am such a stress head (since ive been pregnant of course ) and wondering what people think or if anyone has had this happen?

    Thank You

Ds came out with it looped around his neck twice apparently. It's pretty common. Both my Brother and i had ours in Knots, we are both here. Most sonographers won't tell you where it is as it can cause unnecessary stress for mum.

I wouldn't worry, it's got to go somewhere

Our DD had the cord wrapped over her shoulder like a handbag when we had our 32 week scan and that freaked me out - was funny to look at though. The cord is really really slippery and moves around a lot.

    Don't worry

DD had her cord drapped over her shoulder too, think it was the 20 week or the 30 week scan. Our midwife also told us that its pretty common for bub to have it loosely looped around at birth. Try not to stress too much its pretty common apparently

DS2 was born with the cord over his shoulder. Very common, so I wouldn't worry

Every scan i had with DS from 19wks on, he always had the cord up over his shoulder and he was born with it twisted around his body too going up over his shoulder, around his back and coming back over the other side of his body.

It used to freak me out every time i had a scan (and i had heaps) with it being so close to his neck, but hes ok and it wasnt around his neck when he was born.

DS had his in a knot around his ankle, then wrapped around his waist & up over his shoulder & he is fine came out with a Apgar score of 9 so it didn't seem to worry him

We weren't able to get great photos of my daughter at her 3d/4d scan because she had so much cord up around her face and head. It looked like little bubbles around her face. It was never a problem though. She didn't even have the cord around her neck when she was born

I didn't have a 3d/4d scan with my DD, but I did regulary with all the scans I had with my DS and it was draped over one of his shoulders in all the later scans from 20wks onwards. I had an emergency c-sec for other reasons but when he came out and it was down around his feet.

With my DD the cord was always shown around her arms/belly, never up near her head, but when she came out the cord was wrapped once around her neck and she wasn't breathing and needed help to start breathing. For about a week prior when I went for my CTG monitoring every now and then when she got really active her heartrate would suddenly drop really low and we now know it was because the cord was being pinched between her neck and my pelvis while she was moving around.
She was perfectly fine while I was in labour though, and the only reason the cord was wrapped around her neck was because she did a 300 degree turn while I was in labour to get into a good anterior position to be born, and she's now 6wks and 5d old and perfect in every way so the cord being around her neck didn't cause any problems.

Just remember to mention your concerns to your OB, at the very least they can order some repeat scans towards the end of the pregnancy to see where the cord is positioned.
