I'm just wondering how many of you opted for wellbeing scans in your pregnancy.
Typically at my local maternity there's only your 12 and 20 week scans.
And each scan costs $150, and you get $90 back with medicare. So, still a $60 scan.
When I get pregnant again, I'd like to do some wellbeing scans. Around 28, 34, and 38 weeks.
Because of my last pregnancy I just want to make sure the baby is OK.
In my last pregnancy DD had severe IGUR, I had Oligohydramnios which is very low amniotic fluid, and placental insuffiency.
I just don't want it to be that the baby has issues and I don't know.
I'm going to get my OB to give me a referral for a scan around 13-14 weeks to go to Melbourne where the Ultrasound equipment is better to check for Gastroschisis. (bowels on the outside). The chances of it happening again are about 2-5%.
Is an OB willing to let me do more scans? My OB is generally fantastic, lol.
So, I guess the question is, after having a troublesome first pregnancy (which may have resulted in an angel being born), did you have more scans in your second?
I can totally understand you wanting scans to check on your next bub! I feel the same way. With my DD I was having scans the whole way through from 7-38 weeks fortnightly, and sometimes 2 in one week! It started off early as I had very high anxiety as I had lost a bub before and hated the fact that I hadn't been "allowed" a scan which would have picked up the missed miscarriage. Though from 9 weeks, I was scanned so often as DD had a high nuchal measurement and we were told she would not survive, therefore, we were closely monitored with scans, cvs testing, heart scans etc. Even when it looked like bub was going to be ok, I still needed the scans for my sanity. She was born happy and healthy, but I can tell you that the regular scans were the only thing that helped ease my anxiety for a few days knowing she was alive!
Next time, I will def be asking for an early scan as I hate that so many woman have missed miscarriages but aren't found out till 12-13 weeks when the baby has been gone for weeks! I am lucky my Ob has a good machine in his rooms so I dont have to always be sent to a specialist place. I know I won't be able to have them every fortnight again (well unless its a complicated pregnancy again) and I am ok with it, but I know just 2 ultrasounds the whole pregnancy would not do!
I'm going private, and my first scan was around 9 weeks, when i lost mine i found out at the dating scan and had to have a D&C. With this one they checked me from about 6 weeks..think i had 3 scans before 12 weeks because i had various issues, bleeding and worries....
With my DD who is 21/2, i had no fluid and she was actually induced 3 weeks early, because we didnt realise beforehand and on the day of the scan he panicked...this time i have been concerned about having the same thing happen and he said he would keep an eye on me but so far i havent had anything out the ordinary. Im going to ask this appointment though with the midwives, i know she said if he was concerned he would do some scans closer to the birth to make sure everything was ok and keep an eye on my fluid level.
I think if you are high risk case, and have various issues the ob will do more scans for you and keep an eye on things. Im not sure if you can just ask for more scans if the ob doesnt offer them?
I lost count the number of scans I had with my last two bubs (28 and 25 weekers)....especially my last bub.
With #7 I also had the normal 6w, 12w and 19w scans...also 16 weeks, 21weeks and 23 weeks (external and internal scans)...I also had about 4-5 small scans when I was admitted...only my 12 week scan cost anything the rest where in the public hospital so where free.
I had to push for some of my scans because I was so scared of having another prem...fortunately because of that they picked up my short, funneling cervix and I got another week in.
You will probably be classed as high risk which usually means you will have more scans anyway....once you have had troublesome pregnancy they do like to keep a closer eye on you.
