DD1 is now 28mths old and weaned off the breast around 22mths. She has since then often had a little suck here and there of my colostrum while pregnant but then would jump off my lap and say "all done". Anyway, since having my newest little girl 4 days ago, my milk has come in today in full steam (ouch!) and I am engorged BIG time!
I asked DD1 if she'd like to jump up and have a little suck and she was happy to, jumped on my lap and lay across me and had a few sucks. I expected this to be it, BUT she then swallowed.and swallowed, and swallowed and said "more?" and went back for more..... I couldn't believe it. She remembers how to coordinate her suck and to draw the milk out efficiently after 6mths of not really BF'ing anymore??
I thought babies/kids lost the ability to coordinate their suck shortly after weaning?? I know that children up to the age of about 7 (is it?) can efficiently breastfeed but I thought that for those who have weaned, it's hard for them to learn how to do it again?
It's like she never stopped Bf'ing![]()

That's way better than a pump to get those engorged boobs feeling a bit better!Lovely, thanks for sharing

Aww how beautiful! Good luck on your new found journey! Tandem feeding is hard going and at times annoying and frustrating but rewarding!
Personally, I think it's a myth that babies forget how to suck - I am sure we could all figure it out if we were motivated enough. Congratulations on your new arrival
Warm Regards
Barb
Wow, that's pretty cool! Nothing like a toddler when you're engorged!

Aww that's lovely Shanti![]()
Oh, that's awesome! It was so so handy to have DD1 still feeding when I had DD2 to help with engorgement, otherwise I would have had the pump out every 10 minutes.
And I also just discovered something else great about tandem feeding. DD1 has just had a cold so when DD1 is sick and I feed her then I start making antibodies to what she's got and DD2 gets them. So DD2 never got sick even though it was impossible to keep DD1 away from her. It was awesome, there's nothing worse than a sick baby.
What a clever little chook you are Miss A![]()
That's pretty awesome Shanti!
that is a lovely story.
i have asked DD1 to do this a few times since having dd2....drains those huge boobies....thought i was getting mastitis the other day, got dd1 to drain the boob till it was totally empty!!! and it went!! the beauty of long term BFing i guess
dont know about loosing the suck, i havnt heard that before, im sure thats just me though![]()
congrats on your little gilr btw
Brilliant! Such a handy thing to share the antibodies lol
That is awesome! What a great way to avoid mastitis too!
That's great! DS tried a couple of tiems but didn't even latch on. I was sort of happy about not feeding two, but sad at the same tiem. I do suspect that if he'd really wanted to then he would have![]()
Thats awesome hun.
