Looking for a puppy, need advice

We decided today that we would like a puppy! Actually, I've been moaning for one for years, and Professor has finally come around to the idea

I want a small dog, that won't shed hair everywhere and won't mind being inside. We don't have fences yet, so puppy won't be able to go out without a lead, but that'll be fixed in the next couple of months. I used to have a Shi Tzu, but he's lives with his brother at my Mum's, and I just couldn't separate them now.

So, any breed advice? Any reccommendations for where to buy one? I'd like to go to the pound/shelter first, and I'm googling, but if someone knows better than me please speak up

Keike I just love ****er spaniels, try are a medium sized dog and they don't shed. Like all spaniels they are devoted companions and absolutely live their mums and dads. Ours will literally follow me from the living room to the kitchen and back again even if I am only gone for a second. Totally lovely. A bit silly tho at times. Maybe a smaller spaniel like a king Charles could work if you want the smaller size. They also have lovely personalities. Good luck

If you go through a rescue organisation they will have some idea about the dog's personality so they will be able to match you with a dog better than the pound will.
Try the pedigree select a dog thingy. It will help you narrow down breeds.
The Italian Greyhound isn't much of a shedder and they are utterly gorgeous.

The best dog is a Siamese cat

Well, I don't know about small dogs, but if you change your mind and want something bigger Newfoundlands are just tooo cute, especially as puppies.

King charles cavalier spaniels are gorgeous and playful. They do need to a lot of exercise. Also, they are notorious for genetic diseases. You can put your vet's kids through private school owning a cavalier.

Make sure you get pet insurance.

Laraana - we had a Newfoundland when we were growing up and he was the most beautiful natured dog. But they are big and not inside dogs.

we may be looking for a dog too (as you know through FB). Shih tzu's and Maltese's are your best best for low shedders as they apparently have hair and not fur. They are v.low shedders. Poodles...i dunno, to pomperous in their looks ITMS.
    Goodluck.
I think we may have strayed from the idea, as my little granny dog is almost 11 and don't want to stress her out in her senior years as she loathes other dogs and would be the type that would hide under the bed all day/night.
Go shih tzu me thinks, they are adorable. Even though they do fart ALOT.

Maltese shih tzu's are great little dogs but be prepared to bath them regularly and have them professionally groomed about every 8 weeks. They don't shed a great deal and generally have good personalities. My parents have one, I had two several years ago and both my SILs have them. All have been great dogs but a couple have been a bit snappy at times.

If you want a true non-shedding dog, go for a poodle cross. We have a Spoodle and he's gorgeous! He's a American ****er spaniel crossed with a miniature poodle and he does not shed at all. Their coats are truly amazing as they have a wool coat. I get him professionally clipper at least 5 times a year though to keep his coat healthy and tame. His coat is super wavy and he's such a crazy, adventurous boy (despite being a perfect indoor dog, he LOVES going nuts in the yard) that he ends up getting matted when he's due for a clip.

Any of the 'oodles' breeds generally have a low to non-shedding coat. If you want a small dog, you would need to go for one bred with a toy or miniature poodle. Cavoodles are gorgeous and so loyal, quite the lap dog. Our Spoodle is bursting with personality and has a good mix of the intelligent poodle and the dopey spaniel. Weird combo, I know! He's very funny though and has loads of energy - something to keep in mind with boisterous puppies, lol.

If I was allowed to get another dog I'd get a miniature Groodle - golden retriever poodle cross. OMG, so cute!!

we also used the pedagree website (linked to pal dog food) and also breeders' pages to find out as much as possible about different breeds, then we visited different places to meet the puppies ...

if we were getting one now, I think we'd go to rspca or similar, though, because of stuff we've found out more recently about unethical breeders, etc

maybe PM mayaness (spelling? the one with "if I'm angry I'm the wrong mummy!" thing) ... as she seems to know a lot about breeders, etc.

    good luck!

Hey, DH and I got two minature schnauzer pups April last year, they were our wedding present to eachother. They are non-shedding, loyal, intelligent dogs. I highly recommend the breed. They are also super cute looking with their beards
