Baby's ready, but should I start solids when travelling OS?

My DD is about to turn 6 mths and is champing at the bit to get food in her mouth. I did baby-led solids (whole foods, not puree) with my son, and loved it, so am planning on doing the same with her.

The complexity is that we're going OS for 1 month in a few weeks time, and because I really only like to start my babies on organic food, I had decided to delay her introduction until we came home (she'll be 7.5mths then).

We're going to Italy, and although I've heard that there's a lot of "slow" food there, I'd hate her to have issues so far from home.

Anyone with any thoughts? I've got the ABA's mantra of "Food is for fun until they are 1" in my head, and I'm an avid breastfeeder. I just don't know if waiting until we return will drive her crazy!

    Hmmm....

What a predicament! Can you get organic baby food in jars that you can take with you or get whilst travelling? A friend of mine had a baby in Italy (she lived over there for a while) and her DS was definately older than 1 when they returned but I don't know if she is into organic foods.... I have no idea where to get that kind of information from either.

Are you just going to Italy? What type of accommodation are you staying in?

We're staying in hotels for short times, but the majority of the stay will be in a house where I can cook.

BLS, by it's very nature, doesn't generally involve me "feeding" my baby anything - they do it themselves - and that's generally whole foods, not prepared jar food. It's more about exploration than physical consumption of food at this stage...

having said that, perhaps on the days we can't cook anything, bubs just goes without (boob only) or I give her some organic jar stuff to splash roun in! :-)

We did bls with Dd1, if you have the ability to cook, I would do so, even if you are at a hotel, if you have steamed veg or toast or something similar I would do that, I remember the very early days were less about consuming and more about experimenting with touch taste and texture.
I also seem to remember reading something about if you leave it too late it can be problematic...

Do you hit 6 months before leaving? I probably woukd introduce at home if possible... Sorry I'm on my phone and can't look back

I can't only tell you what I would do...

I would start at 6mths, that way you are at home, starting when you are traveling and changing places continually may stress her out... If you do it first she will know what's going on and hopefully adapt more easily.

Maybe give it a go, see how she takes it, then take it from there
But you are right, stick to your mantra of food is fun and if it gets dreadful for a day or two, skip them and then go back to it.
I seem to remember we only did one meal a day early on anyway

    Hi,

if she wants it - let her have a go. As you know, at this age she can have what you are having. I bet she'd munch the guts out of a margharita pizza - and what a cool story, my first food was pizza in Italy! Do you eat only organic food? If so she'll eat what you are eating - if not she'll eat what you are eating. italy is a devloped country - who would want "jars" when you could have all that cool fresh pasta. Enjoy (quietly I am sooooo jealous.....
