Our beagle isn't well. She's lost weight recently, but I changed their food around a bit with the intent she loose weight (she was becoming a barrel), but she's gone a bit far the other way (in my opinion anyway. On the scales, she's right where she should be). I haven't reduced her food, just cut out feeding her in the morning and giving that amount to her at dinner time, with her normal dinner.
Yesterday, we picked them up from the kennels. The kennel staff said they had both been their normal happy selves. Gave them dinner last night, wolfed it down as normal.
Got up this morning and she'd been sick and has got the runs. It's obvious which dog it is because our co cker spaniel is bouncing around like normal and our beagle is just sad and mopey. I tried to give her some food, and she just had a nibble.
Took her to the vet this morning, she's had two injections, one an antibiotic, the other an anti-inflammatory. Told that she either has a gastro-like bug, pancreatitis or a parasite. I had to put her on boiled chicken and rice. The vet said she wasn't dehydrated "yet". We had the choice of taking her home and returning in 24 hours for a follow up and more antibiotics in tablet form, or leave her there for blood tests and on a drip, no food or water for a few days. She said 90% of dogs pick up after the injections, suggesting that it's gastro.
So we brought her home and she ate some food and has kept it down. She perked up a little. But as the day has gone on, she's gone back to mopey and sad and she's just picked at her dinner. Me thinks I'm going to have to take her to dog hospital tomorrow and leave her behind.
Makes me so sad. She's beautiful and part of our family. And her buddy will be beside herself being alone. I'm hoping she picks up overnight
It's awful when your babies are sick hey? My girl had a tummy upset a few weeks back and the vet did pretty much the same thing as yours. Except he advised not to feed for 24 hours after the vomit to give her tummy a rest.
She wasn't great last night, she let me keep her inside in the end which was good. I let our other dog out for a wee and she didn't even lift her head. But this morning she's gotten up, devoured her chicken and rice, howled at me and is bouncing around. We're back at the vet in an hour, but I'm thinking now I'll be able to bring her home again. YAY!
Vet's happy! She's on antibiotics for the next week, everything is looking good and we were spared the animal hospital. It was funny, we've had this particular vet a few times in the past and he looked at her and said "Is this Miss Beagle? Wow, you've had a good run, haven't seen you in ages!" LOL. In the first year of her life, she was at the vet a lot. She had a habit of injuring herself, only solved when we got our spaniel so she had a playmate.
Ohhh this is such great news!! I just saw this thread at an odd time, our dog has been sick a couple of days now as well, we took him in to the vet yesterday morning, similar story except after an over night stay last night on fluid & antibiotics he is worse this morning not better, blood tests are inconclusive just say that he has a big infection somewhere, the vet isn't hopeful, nothing they are doing is making him respond or any more comfortable and with taking other factors into consideration we have to say Goodbye tonight
Didn't mean to thread thieve, just meant to say I know how worrying it can be when a furbaby is sick and the great relief and happiness when they are better again.. This is the second furbaby we've lost in 6 months, I'm so glad your story is a much happier one!! Enjoy her!! xx
