1st step in IVF seeing the FS need some advice on what to expect
Hi Ladies
Just a bit of background first, been TTC with DH for 2 1/2 yrs and finally after reading all the information on BB and the web have booked in to see Dr Ashley Fong at Westmead. I have seen that Westmead are very cost affective and great at this whole process. I'm just wondering, since I've already had ALL the tests done, ie Hycosy and sperm test etc would she send me to be seen again or would the results be sufficient? Will I start the IVF straight away? I'll prob be on CD1 on Wednesday which is great timing but not sure when the meds are meant to start? From there how long is the whole process to implantation? I'm just wondering so I can organise time off from work etc.
hey ok iam not to knwldge able as i hve only just finshed my first round of ivf ,me and dh have also been trying for 2and half yrs ,when we went to our ivf spec we also had all diff tests dne ie sperm test ,lapri surgry etc and we just took all that medical info with us to show her and she was said there was no neeed to re do the tests ,but our ivf clinic once u see the specialst you hve to hve a meeting with the nurse co-ordinator and councillor and accounts to explain evrythng then once u hve dne that u can strt your cycle when u r ready and thy will set out a plan/timetable with dates of what will happen when eg period ,injections ,scan ,collection ...any way hope this helps a little baby dust to u oxox
Hi there - often the IVF clinics like to run some tests of their own. In particular ours ran my DH's sperm analysis again. There are many different things that a FS can try outside of IVF, so it will be very dependant on your personal situation. With me we tried 6 months of OI (Ovulation Induction) prior to IVF/ICSI.
I doubt that they will start anything on the first appointment. Even if you do need to have IVF they generally have to book you in with the clinic etc. Even when we started on IVF, we had to book in the month prior to starting on the Pill - we basically started the booking process when I was going through my last cycle of OI in case it failed (which it did).
No sure if that helped and good luck - I hope that the FS can get you on the right path to falling pregnant.
We had a lap then a 8mth rest. Our first visit back we said we wanted to do IVF and the ob/gyn said if all the paperwork etc happened in a timely manner we'd be transferring in 6wks. The longest part of that was getting the police checks, which you only have to do if you live in Victoria (I think), this took me two weeks and my partner 4. I don't know why his took so much longer. Once we had them, it took 4wks to do a down regulated cycle, from start of spray to transfer.
We also had to retest sperm but it had been a couple of years since we'd had that done, and there were a couple of extra bloods for me. Pretty straightforward though.
Hi Mia, welcome to BB. I went through IVF/ICSI/PGD to fall pregnant with my daughter. We went through IVF for genetic reasons, not fertility though, so not everything I write will be the same for you.
After our first appointment with the specialist the first things we had to do were to go to an IVF information session, I had to have an ultrasound on my uterus, ovaries etc to make sure they looked ok, and we had to have an appointment with a geneticist to get the ok to go ahead with the PGD side of things. Once we had that done (which took about a month) I went back for another appointment with my specialist. At that appointment he went over what sort of cycle he wanted me to do. Because I had no fertility issues, my uterus looked fine, and my ovaries were poly-cystic (not the syndrome, the good sort of poly-cystic) I was able to do an antagonist cycle. He asked when my period was due and when I told him within the next few days he immediately rang his nurse to book an appointment for me to go and pick up the meds and for her to teach me what to do with them all. Three days later AF arrived and the next day I started my IVF cycle. So for me things happened really fast! It was great!
I would guess that some of your previous tests might be able to be used instead of getting them done again, but that might depend on how old they are too. It might also take longer if you have issues with fertility and have to do a long down regulated cycle.
I guess there are just so many variables to take into account that it's hard to predict how long the whole process might take. I sincerely hope that things go quickly and smoothly for you, and that you have some lovely news to tell us all soon

Hey nice to hear from u
2 days to go woohoo! n everythn for u! How exciting!!
I cant wait to b at ur stage, im a little scared of both when they extract d eggs n also implantation. 1cos ive never been under local or any sort if anaesthetic n 2. Cos i think when they put d egg back theres no anaesthetic? Is it painful? Does dh get to b in there with u? I know for the extraction he doesnt which makes it scarier for me. Any advice wld b awesme.
The injections etc arent worrying me at all as ive done it before with iui.
How many eggies did u get put back? My fs told us we can only hav one put in max??
Also are u on any othr forum? I used to b on the ttc ocer 12mths one but cant seem to find one like dat but for ppl like us doin ivf. Sorry hav heaps of q's today.
Im in sydney too, carlingford
hey ok our experience was : the anaesthetic was ok u just feel a bit drunk lol ( i hve full anaesthetic before etc and its knocks u about this is heaps better ) and yes thats right when thy put the egg back in their is no anaesthetic but it does not hurt they put in a specturm (u knw that plastic thng they put in when u hve a pap smear ) then put this tube up there with the embryo inside it u dnt feel anytng takes 5 min and with our ivf clinic they had our embryo that they choose to implant up on a tv screen ( its attatched to a microscope in the other room) but yeah we wlked in and there was this big ball of cells on a tv screen amazing and dh was presnet for that and also with our clinic he was able to sit in there for egg collection 2 .. he sat rght next to me and thy hve screens so u can watch what thy r doing inside u ( dnt worry its no graphic its just like an untersound pic black and white etc bit blurry ) and yeah our clinic was the same only one embryo max thy said thy only ever put two bck in if u r approaching a certain age and hvnt had much success with emryo nmbrs etc and pretty much aftr the collection i was sore for about 20mins then i was ok got dressed had smethng to eat etc then went hme an hr later and jsut rested that day i felt ok but the next day i felt like smeone had squished my ovaries in their hands but it wasnt antyhgn panodol cldnt fix i hope i hve helped ...ok awesme well our clinic is sydney ivf newcastle so thy prob hve exact same proc etc if u going thrgh sydney ivf xoxolx
Thats a great help thank u so much! It puts my mind at ease that i know wats goin to happen to me in the nxt 6wks.
I hav my u/s, b/t's n dhs swimmers test on friday then we hav to see fs again for d results nxt week n im sure thats when thw ball will start well n truly rollin, fingers crossed. Let me know how u go!! Xo
