Question Mylanta, overhandling & burping a reflux bub??? How did you do this?

We've confirmed DS has Reflux, its started out as bad wind but seems to have progressed to a mix of reflux/silent reflux, with him throwing up most of his feeds & screaming with the silent reflux. My GP has suggested 2.5-5ml of mylanta three times a day & see if there is any change after a few days.

My question is if you used Mylanta how soon did you see a diffrerence with your bub??

My GP mentioned 'overhandling'. Im at a loss how I can avoid this with a reflux bub. How did you handle this?

He also mentioned burping....I can't for the life of me recall if he said it was a good thing or bad thing with reflux???

I've always burped my babies otherwise they scream from lower wind pain as well as reflux.

Never heard of the overhandling though - what is that?

Never used mylanta either, used infant gaviscon for 2 of them and zantac now for dd3. That worked immediately.

I think it means if you pat reflux babies or jiggle them too much it doesn't help.

Ahh ok. Well I've had 4 reflux babies (2 chucky, 2 silent) and never been told that before - learn something new every day! Lol

DD2 was on Mylanta and I saw an improvement the very first day. Don't know anything about the overhandling though. I used to have to burp her as she also had colic. Good luck with it hun

I tried Mylanta but DD wasn't able to keep it down - the minty taste was just too much for her.

I asked the Dr about gaviscon and he said it wasn't a problem to use either. I only used the gaviscon for 3 days but found it did help slightly. The amount of time it was taking to get her to drink it, plus the fact she was still throwing up and needing to be held upright 30+ minutes still meant i was extremely exhausted, so I went back to the GP who prescribed Zantac.

So far, the Zantac is proving to be even more difficult to give, but I did just read that blowing into your child's face causes a swallow reflex so I might try that in the morning.

oh good thanks ladies I gave DS mylanta yesterday at his 4pm feed & he slept through from 8pm till 2:30am this morning!!!!! DF & I were stoked lol & no chuck up after feeds untill this morning. He wasnt fussed on mylanta this morning though, coughed & spluttered it everywhere. So Im quietly hopeful that its doing the trick & he will actually sleep today .

emc2 - lol ok I wont take it as gospel then thank heavens....I was racking my brain trying to work out how the hell Im supposed to handle him less when all he does is scream if i put him down & writhe in pain with wind!!

Anything in particular that worked with winding your reflux bubs? DS is extremely hard to move the wind withiut jiggling or bouncing.

Im also getting him to a chiro or physio asap to see if that helps too. Ive heard great things.

Never heard the no jiggling or overhandling, if anything it's been the opposite for us, they need to be burped more often and held to be kept upright in a sling or cuddled to keep them settled.

We burped by holding the chin and turning them in a circle, much easier than patting the back.

No it's hard to describe, you sit them on your knee, hold the chin and turn their body in a circle, supporting their back. A midwife showed us with dd1, she hated being burped the traditional way.

DD had a lot of refulx and I was not a fan of Mylanta and only used it as a last result. The ABA suggested at the time to burp her every 5-10 mins during her feed to prevent too much bubbles in her tummy and also sleeping with her cot elevated. Also rather than patting her back just doing big circles. I wonder whether the over handling is more fo the ease of milk coming up?.

Time seemed to be the only thing that really "cured" it. They go through a phase of that anyway around the 4-8 week mark. You might find that it settles as bub gets older

That seems like alot of Mylanta to start a little bub on. I was told by my peadiatrician not to give my dd mylanta unless it was a last resort and then to only give 1ml. But then every Dr gives different advice. We found Zantac to be fantastic. Mylanta just settles the acid in the tummy whereas Zantac stops the overproduction of that tummy acid which causes the pain. So really with the mylanta it is a quick fix, so he should have relief immediately but if he has silent reflux the symptoms will come back every time he feeds. Maybe get a refferal to see a peadiatrician. I found offering smaller feeds more frequently helped my dd and also keeping her upright for half an hr after every feed helped. We also bought a wedge to go under her bassinet mattress which elevated it to help keep her milk in her tummy and lessen the reflux. I had to burp dd otherwise she would get terrible wind but just try not to move bub around too much after feeding. Try burping more frequently during feeds so there isn't a build up. My dd also slept alot of the time on her tummy on our chest because lying on her back worsened her reflux. I really do recommend the Zantac though or something else called losec. Zantac was a lifesaver for our little girl. Good luck
