    Herbs and spices

    Whats the deal???

I make a lot of food that uses herbs and spices or already contain them (stir in sauces etc) but when I have looked on the internet, some places say ok in food but others say that they might cause problems (uterine stimulant).

As I have had 2 m/c's in the last 7 months, I don't want to jeopardize this pg.

DH has just bought something that contains thyme and the other day, nutmeg. Should I avoid altogether or is this just the usual scaremongering.

might be worth talking to a naturopath about it as they'll have more idea than a GP or similar. Probably just scaremongering but it's always best to be safe, especially as you mention you've had two m/cs recently.

All the best, hope you get some answers and get that sticky bub too!

I vaguely recall reading that. In the first tri I just ate what I could keep down. Not a lot of herbs or spices involved.

I say do whatever gives you confidence in your ability to carry and nurture this beautiful healthy baby of yours. No matter what you have to give up, I promise you 100% that it will be worth it.

    Hi peppper100,
Some herbs and spices can act as uterine stimulants and as such can potentially trigger uterine contractions. Mainly the 'hard' herbs, rosemary, thyme, turmeric (spice). The amounts required to cause this effect however would be the quantities found in herbal extracts /tinctures etc. the amounts we use in food is generally negligible and not something to worry about. also need to avoid essential oils of these herbs. Speak to a naturopath if you are overly concerned. HTH.

I would assume it's in high doses like supplements and essential oils etc that need to be avoided. I don't think the small amout you would get from a meal would have any effect but like PP said go and speak to a naturopath to know for sure and give you some peace of mind
    Good luck
