    Naming Day without 'Godparents'

Just wondering if anyone has held an Naming Day for their child/children without naming Godparents as such??

We had a Naming Day for DS1 when he was 8 months old and had my brother and his girlfriend as the Godparents.

DS2 is 2.5 and DD will be 1 in December, we are thinking of having a Naming Day for the two of them and DD's 1st Birthday combined.

We have struggled to confidently find Godparents for DS2 hence the delay and i'm not too sure for DD either.

Have you had the day without the naming of individuals as Godparents? I'm thinking something along the lines of naming DS2 & DD with close loved ones around and asking them all to be guiding people in their lives?

As we are not religious and Naming Days aren't necessarily i am wondering if we can go a little less formal??

Would love to hear of how others may have varied things to suit their needs/beliefs?

We were planning a Naming Day as we're not religious. Tbh, I never even thought of 'godparents'. I didnt know you did that in secular ceremonies.

I'm sure you could skip that bit. Just have a general, welcome to the family kind of ceremony. Asking that the people there be a guiding light is a lovely idea. After all, it takes a village to raise a child

    Thanks tashybabe

Yes with DS1 we did name 'Godparents' and the ceremony was preformed by the civil celebrant who married us.

So very true, i love that saying 'it takes a village to raise a child

    Thanks again

yep - we did! The other people who we shared our Son's naming day with named the godparents for their child but my DH and I decided that we just COULDN'T decide for Aidan so the Celebrant told everyone that DH and I couldn't possibly decide on choosing Godparents as there are too many people with whom we would consider perfect so we called upon our close friends and family to look out for our Son and to guide him through life as he needs it
