    Red face How much water?

How much water (on average) do children need per day? Ive googled but get a range of answers so just wondering if there is a general rule of thumb recommended?

I read it's recommended for them to have 1.5-2litres my dd1 struggles, she struggles to eat her lunch tho and would rather play... Gerrhhh story of my life?!?! I just make her drink a cup first thing in the morning and when she gets home. Dd2 on the other hand constantly has a sippy cup of water in her mouth since weaning!

I always worried DS had too much. He carts his little drink bottle with him everywhere-even taking it to bed with him and it's not uncommon for it to be empty again by the morning either.

I'm really not sure if DD gets enough water either - now that it's warming up I've been thinking about it more.
I found that as my DD got older she started drinking less and less - it used to be enough to just have a cup or bottle around and she was constantly finishing it off but now I have to specifically remind her to have a drink - which doesn't always work well when I'm busy! She definitely has a glass with meals and when she has takes a break from playing usually.
Sorry I couldn't be more specific!

hmm I dont think we would get that 1.5 - 2 litres thing. We have water available at all times, just doesnt seem to get drunk much, but lots of toilet trips during the day and very heavy nappy's come morning It just doesnt seem like a lot, especially in comparison to 1.5 litres!!

As far as I know, 1litre is recommended for over 5s. Under 5s there is no real guideline except that they drink their thirst (of course assuming they aren't dehydrated).

    Good question!!!

When in hospital they were happy if Brendan drank more than 500ml water if he drank other things as well. He's 4.5yrs.

We were recently in hospital with my DS (12 mths old) and they told me a child who weighs 10kg should be having at least 1 lt. Remember this also inclusive of water in food

In case anyone is still interested - we were told a child over 3 should be drinking 1.5 - 2 litres a day.
