How to fix a snotty nose in a 6m.o help me I need sleep!!!

My almost 6 m.o has a minor cold that isn't getting him to down except when it comes to sleeping and feeding because his nose is all stuffy.

I have one of those suction thingies in the baby medical kit but I must be stupid because I can't work it! Any other suggestions??????

Last night the only way he'd sleep is if I sat up and had him over my shoulder, I got like 1hr of broken sleep all night

Probably not what you want too hear, but when my ds was sick the only way he slept was up right so I just stayed on the couch with him in the hug-a-bub. You could try fess if you haven't already. Spray some up his nose then try the sucker thing. Sorry he's sick, hope someone has some kore helpful advice.

You poor things We always prop the top end of the cot up with bricks when Moo is sick, does make a difference to his comfort. But I can't work those suction things either - lucky my DH is a whiz at it!

We do a nice warm shower in a steamy bathroom, a vicks like thing on a hanky in the pillow (cant think of the brand but its 'natural') bed propped on an angle and a vapouriser in the room.

I did notice the Fess stuff that munchkin_mumma mention, havent tried it but have a spray ready for next time. I use the adult version and have always been against nasal sprays, it works quite well.

Sorry he is sick, hun its horrible to watch.

hugs to you..- get some fess ( saline soution) form the chemist and put drops into bubs nose will help thin out mucus. wit the sucker.. squeeze teh bulb then while holding it squeezed insert just into bubs nose and then release the bulb bit. this action should suck out the mucus in nose which willhelp bub feeel better

I would invest in a good room vapouriser..we have the Eukybear one and it was fantastic. You can put Eukybear on his feet and then put socks on as well. That helped DD when she was too small for anything else.
Another trick it to put a bit on his pj top.

I read about this (the name will make you laugh) and purchased one - I've used it on DS (with fess spray) and it works a treat although he's never had a really bad stuffy nose:

Nosefrida...The snotsucker - google it!

I can't say DS has enjoyed it, but it sure does get the snot out!

I second the Fess. Used heaps. Spray, wait , spray, wait 2min , spray. Mucus will thin and drip out. With the nose bulb, remember to hold it at an angle to bub's nose or you risk damaging delicate nasal tissue. Squeeze bulb, hold at angle to nostril touching nostril, release and mucus will be sucked out. My DD would normally just sneeze it out after a few sprays.
Try lots of tummy time, mucus will literally drip out.
Apply some eukybear/vicks rub to bub's singlet/ clothes (direct on skin is ok in some bubs but at 6 months prob better to avoid skin contact as some bubs can have sensitive skin).
Have a long warm bath together with door closed (to trap steam in). If using a vaporiser, remember to clean daily as the access moisture will encourage mold/bugs to grow.
You can also use drixine nose drops (paediatric) , limit to 1 drop twice daily for only 5 days. it is a decongestant and will dry the nose enough to allow bub to sleep. I use it just at night so both bub (and I!) can get some sleep!
Soak a face washer in a bowl of warm water and hold over bub's nose (not too tight!) so she can breathe in the warm vapour. this will soothe the nostril as well as loosen mucus. Do this as often as possible (almost every half hour is ideal).

I usually put a couple of towels under the mattress to raise it up, put some vics on the chest, put a vapouriser on, run a hot shower before bath for the steam and finally I put some saline drops in DS's nose (he doesn't do the spray ). GL hun! Hope your DS feels better soon!

If you really mean that...I have heard if you can't get the sucker thing to work, you can place your mouth over bubs' nose and *ahem* suck the snot out yourself...

Oh my goodness, are we living the same life!? My DD (who was born the same day as your DS) also has a cold and we barely slept last night too. Very helpful thread for me at this present moment!

I hope our bubbas are both better soon and we can all get some sleep!

Thanks to your replies got the sucker to work, first 10 times it was frustrating cos he kept squirming but then I discovered if I sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star whilst doing it, he smiles and stays still
Whatever works!

Also today he has lost his voice ! Plus for me because it's keeping my life nice and peaceful but the poor guy must have a very sore throat obviously I can't give him any throat lozenges !!! Any ideas though?

Not sure about the sore throat, maybe sucking on a frozen teething ring? Nice and cold going down his throat.

I also find with the blocked nose that I give dd a bath right before her bedtime bottle and I put eucalyptus oil in the water (just a few drops) she breaths it in with the steam from her bath and it also coats her skin and hair a little so she breathes it in all night.

A little tip when using the bulb.. block the other nostril when sucking the snot out of the other.

My DD has had a cough all through this cold. Sometimes the coughing makes her gag and vomit up snot/milk . She's getting better now too, but still coughs sometimes. Often colds end with a cough. Just keep an eye on your DS to make sure it doesn't move to his chest. Take him to the drs if you're worried.

I hope he's feeling better soon!
