Is "I just knew" too cliche? XP
1) If you have a tattoo, do you remember how you decided you wanted to get your first one?
2) Was it a spur of the moment thing? Or was it something you thought about for a while?
3) How did you decided where to get it?
That part is a little easier for me that the others. It needs to be somewhere I can "show it off" so to speak if I want to, but cover up when I need to.
Shoulder, ankle, upper arm I guess. No where that will have excessive skin stretching (although I think that part's done already LOL)
Its the whether to get one part. I think I want one. I certainly like the idea of getting one, and I kind of know what I want.
It's the 'oh my god are you insane' reaction I know Im going to get from my family and family in law thats stressing me out. I think I might have to keep it hush hush for 6 months and then do it. That way I can show them this thread and say -see - I've been thinking about it for a while, lol
But seriously, particularly for 1 & 2 above - if anyone would share their experiences I would appreciate it.

I have wanted tattoos since my late teens but didnt get my first till I was 25. I was never 100% sure what I wanted until I had my DD, so my first tattoo is her nameIts on my back just below my neck itms. I chose that spot for the same sort of reasons you mentioned, I can show it off but it's also easily covered if I ever need to for work etc in the future. After that I was hooked! I got lilies on my calf, a lot more out there then the name, but I can still cover it if needed. Now I'm deciding where to put ds's name.
I'm quite lucky that none of my family have a problem with tattoos, but to be honest I wouldn't care if they did. It's your body, do what makes you happy

Nope, definitely not.
And to be honest, I think that's how I feel.
Its the explaining it to others part when in their words im already "clearly obsessed and in need on an intervention". Hmm.
I've wanted a tatt since I was like 14 lol. My dad had tatts, as did many people in my childhood, so I guess it was pretty normal for me to see. Plus now, practically every person I know has a tattoo. I want to get DD's name, footprints and birthdate somewhere, not too sure exactly where. Subsequent children can go underneath![]()
I want one too, I just can't decide what or where. I'm worried I'll get bored with it, I tend to have a short attention spanso i need something I'll love forever. And I want something a bit unique, or in a spot that's unique. I just cant decide!
In your case with your family I wonder if you would be better off raising the idea first. Bring it up in a lighthearted way, then again, then again and each time let them know you are a bit more serious. Kind of the mental equivalent of letting them step slowly into the water. Then when you do it, they might still think youa re crazy but they wil have come to terms with your craziness![]()
I had my first one in mind since I was 13, and got it done a couple of weeks after my 18th birthday. My others were planned for a few months, with the exception of one which was quite spontaneous (in that I decided one day and got the tattooist to design it the following week) as a remembrance tattoo for my miscarriage, but I still completely love to this day.
I like mine to be places I can cover up if I need to, but equally show off without showing too much flesh. So they can mostly be seen when I am wearing a singlet top but are invisible at work.
Number 1 - spur of the moment, do I regret it, not really because it is somewhere that is easily hidden.
Number 2 - took about 5 years to find the actual design that I liked for it, then 2 months wait to get into my tattooist
Number 3 - pretty spur of the moment for the design, a months wait to get into the tattooist
Number 4 - idea rattling around in my head for about 6 months, months wait to get into tattooist, probably a bit bigger than I wanted but I love it
Try getting a fake one done and see how you like that, I've done that for where I initially wanted my fourth tattoo but ended up getting it where I got it instead (and much bigger).
I had wanted a tattoo since my late teens I think. Probably at least 5 years before I got one. I never really knew what I wanted or where and I was scared of hating it so I stalled. Then my H said he wanted to get one... next week! I hated the idea of him getting one when I really one so I said i'd come with him. I then spent the week scouring ideas and drawing on my ankles with black texta to test the location. I realise my ankle just seemed "right" so I decided on the right spot. I love it and it's perfect (have had it for about 10 years now). I think knowing I really one for so long it didn't matter that I rushed the final decision as then I went with my gut. I like that it's not always on show but I think it makes a pair of strappy heels pretty sexy![]()
I got my first tattoo on my right shoulder, it wad a lot bigger than I first wanted (taking up my entire shoulder blade)
My only regret was getting my first tattoo somewhere that I couldnt see it easily and admire it (my dh got his first one on the back of.his forearm) I then fell pg not long after.
Then after I had her and stopped bfing it slowly has turned into a 3/4 sleeve.. Im just in love with it. Its me and too bad.
My family did the 'are you sure?' Supportive thing I guess.. But I reminded them that this is what I want..
As far as my working or what people think.. This is me and if you dont want me to work for you because I have tattoos then I dont really want to work for you!
But I think in the end in your heart you'll know,if/when/where :-)
I wanted one ever since I saw the griffin wings on the chick from ''The Crow'' at 15, so at 17 I had wings tattooed on my back. I still love them, they're very much me. I can show them off, or cover them up very easily. My parents were ok with it, when my dad's friends talked about their tattoo's he was actually quite proud that his teenage daughter had the largest one (excellent priorities, my parents!). I haven't had any since, and have no desire for any more. I did it, it's done, I'm done![]()
From design to completion was about 8 weeks, because it took a few sessions for mine to be finished. I had a tattooist friend so she designed it. My advice would be to get something designed for you, and not off the wall/book. Get something you really love, if you want something big, get it. Don't settle for something smaller, or not quite what you want because you're worried about other people's reactions. Once you have it, people's reactions are generally positive. Even my grandma likes my fairy wings![]()
I got my first when I was 18 but wanted it since I was 14. I always knew I wanted a dolphin and changed up the design I wanted by having my son's name put under it. I got it on my inner ankle and it is perfect. I have got 4 more since then and have another 4 planned. I come from a family that was very much against tattoos but they all came around eventually and even my Nan admitted that she likes mine and thinks it is sweet.
I hope you find something that is perfect for you :-)

1. I actually wanted the song lyric that became my first tattoo on my headstoneThen I realised I wanted to be around for people to comment, and it would be too far in the future anyway, so I decided on a tattoo instead. I'd always thought about getting one, and for years planned to get a massive back piece, but once I grew up a little I thought that was a bad idea.
2. My first wasn't, I thought about that for about a year before taking the plunge. The second definitely was, and I regret that. The third, Ianto's one, I started designing a few days after he was born and got it done a little under a month later.
3. First and second - went with what the "artist" suggested. I wish I could move them, I don't think the first is visible enough and the second is far too visible for my liking. For the third, I knew of want to get a similar tattoo for each of my kids, so it had to be somewhere large and visible - my torso seemed the logical place, and I wasn't going to get my boobs and stomach done!So it had to be my back.
