    Water-inspired names

    Hi!

I am compiling a list of baby names- boys and girls (since we don't know what bub is). As well as including names that I simply like, I am trying to come up with water-inspired names. I kept my 'maiden name' which is a 'water' name and my kids have DH's name. I thought it might be nice to give this bub a name inspired by, or meaning, water. I am looking for help
The names can be broad interpretations, ie. can mean ocean or another body of water.
So far I have only come up with girls names:

    Tallulah ('leaping water');
    Pearl (definitely a broadening of the concept, but clearly lives in water!);
    Mira (MEE- rah, Sanskrit for 'ocean');
Avanyu (ah-VANH-you, a deity who is a feathered sea serpent and guardian of water).
I would appreciate comments on the above names, and any others that you know of.

    Thanks in advance!

I love Tallulah but Mira is beautiful! Not Pearl.

I think you could go with any body of water that is special to you, like Murray for the Murray River for example. Or Venice.

    Boys names from thinkbabynames:
    Atwater ... "At the water." ... [1]

Baptist ... The Christian prophet John the Baptist baptized Jesus with water in the River Jordan ... [5]

    Brooks ... "Water, small stream." ... [4]

Caspian Place name: the Caspian Sea is the largest inland body of water in the world ...

Cranford ... Place name. Also probably refers to the water-dwelling birds. [1]

Destin ... The French surname Destan means "by the still waters". [2]

Devereux ... Probably a place name having to do with water "eau" ... [1]

    Dover ... "Water." ...

Earvin ... "Green or fresh water." ...

Fintan ... Fintan himself lived only on bread and water.

    Fontaine ... "Fountain, water source." ... [4]

Glendower ... "Valley of water." [5]

Irvin ... "Green or fresh water." ... [8]

    Kenn ... "Bright water." ...

Kyle ... Place name that refers either to a narrow body of water between two land masses ... [8]

Lake Geography name for an inland body of water. [5]

Lamar ... "The water; land famous." ... [4]

Mark ... The famous author Mark Twain (originally Samuel Clemens) took his name from the call of Mississippi River boatmen: "Mark twain!" meaning that the water was two fathoms deep ... [17]

Moses ... Also possibly (Hebrew) "drawn out of the water". Biblical ... [15]

Nalin ... a beautiful flower that flourishes in muddy waters ... [1]
Raphael ... possibly the one who stirred the waters at the pool of Bethesda to give it healing powers ... [14]

Ryan ... Also possibly (Gaelic) "water" ... [6]

    Tahoe ... "Big water." ...

    Tahoma ... "That frozen water." ... [3]

    Trent ... "Gushing waters." ... [3]

    Varun ... "Water god." [1]

Waterford ... "Ford over the water." ...

Wiley ... Also possibly a place name, "water meadow" ... [2]

Fictional ocean planets have been used as story motifs:
Caladan is an ocean planet in the Dune universe created by Frank Herbert, first mentioned in the 1965 novel Dune. Caladan is the ancestral fiefdom of House Atreides.
Kamino, in the film Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones.[22]
Manaan, in the game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
Kahje, Proteus and Yamm in the Mass Effect series.
The ocean world Kainui, which, along with its twin uninhabited ocean planet, Kaihapa, circles a binary star system, in the novel Noise by Hal Clement. Kainui's Maori-descended colonists live a nomadic existence, traveling about by boat or on one of the planet's anchorless floating cities. This is an example of a realistically deep and cold ocean.[22]
Aquas, in the Star Fox series, is usually portrayed as an ocean planet, with the majority of its surface as water.
Thalassa, from the novel The Songs of Distant Earth by Arthur C. Clarke.
    Oleana from the game Meteos.
Turquoise from the Alastair Reynolds Novella Turquoise Days.
Aqua, a terraformed version of Mars resembling Venice in the manga series Aria.
Bathyos, from the television series Buzz Lightyear of Star Command.
Levo, from the game Escape velocity
Aquitar, from the TV series Power Rangers.

    Marianina

There's a beautiful folk song about a water goddess of the ocean, rivers and rain. I hope you'll fall in love. it's one of my favorites.

O'er the ocean flies a merry fay, Soft her wings are as a cloud of day, As she passes all the blue waves say: Marianina, do not roam, Whither, whither is your home, Come and turn us into foam, Marianina, Marianina, Come, O come and turn us into foam!"

O'er the fields she passes to and fro, By the cornstalks standing row by row, Poppies whisper as they see her go, "Marianina, little friend, Whither your footsteps wend, Come and teach us how to bend, Marianina, Marianina, Come and teach us how to bend."

O'er the mountains when the day is done, When the clouds are gath'ring o'er the sun, While they, weeping, whisper one by one-"Marianina, come again, We have tried to dance in vain, Come and turn us into rain, Marianina, Marianina, Come and turn us into rain."

Hi Ash now it’s your turn. I remember so fondly the discussions we had leading up to the birth of my DS2.... I’m still chuckling.

For a water inspired name I really like Laurina or Wallaya. There is a beautiful plant called a Water Gum or Wallaya (Tristaniopsis laurina) that grows along rocky creeklines here in Sydney.

Tristaniopsis – Honouring Juels de Tristan a French botanist.
Laurina – Laurel like, referring to the leaves.
    Wallaya – local Aboriginal name.

Awwa? That's what my DD says for water...

OK, that's just silly. I love Tallulah and River. I think they're beautiful options.

    River names I like:

Acheron - in Victoria. I have beautiful memories of sitting in a rockpool there.
Avon - a little bit "The Wire" but I'm OK with that.
    Huon
    Richmond
    Clarence
Maranoa - I love hearing about this river on the radio. We went there when DD was little, and it is full of life.

Banjo, as in the man from snowy river (or author of, at least) is that a bit far?

Isis - her tears were believed to be the cause of the flooding of the Nile

Wyatt - means from the wood or water

Anyway, that's what i have for now

How are you going with names?
Hi Meow Thank you so much for thinking of me. How is it going? Well, it's not going anywhere really! DH isn't that enthused about using a water name. I read all the names out from this thread, and he said 'Reade, Kelsey and Brooke are OK' (thanks MD, Onyx and 3LM) and 'I really like Nalin'. We have had a lot of rain and some flooding in our region for the last week - I think a water name is even more appropriate! I think DH feels a bit limited by only having water-inspired names as an option. Meow, thank you so much for your comprehensive post - I really appreciate it. How would you pronounce Nalin? I still love Mira, but I am worried that people won't know how to pronounce it and will say 'mirror' DH doesn't like Tallulah. Caladan sounds familiar, where else have I heard that name?

Thank you to everyone else too.

Hi Epacris! I agree, naming your little guy was fun. Wow, I can't believe he is 9 months old!

Hi Audax, The Clarence and Richmond are some of the rivers that have had flooding issues over the last week! Might be appropriate.

Hi deedles, I like some of your names - Kallan, Genevieve. Thanks.

Hi Kim, Lotus is a very sweet name. I'm not sure if it goes with our other kids' names.

Hi Kuraiza, is Marianina pronounced Mah-ree-uh-nee-nuh? Thanks for posting a song you love

Hi Peanutter, Moses is a name to live up to!

To those who posted 'River' - I used to love this name, and I had a crush on River Phoenix Unfortunately, it is a very common name where I live.

    Thanks again everyone.

Marianina isn't Maria Nina, it's pronounced marry-a-nina (said really fast, lol).
