Head lice and custody visits?

At a birthday party late yesterday, SIL mentioned to me that she's realised her son had head lice that morning and had treated him before the party. She mentioned it so I knew to check DD in case he had shared him little critters when they were playing earlier in the week.

I didn't get a chance to check last night because she was asleep when we got home but have checked this morning and she definitely has them - not heaps but I found one so she needs to be treated.

I don't have any treatment on hand and my issue is that we have a full day planned - DD is visiting her dad and DF and I have the day out making with a few appointments made for wedding decisions and stuff. I don't have time to treat her this morning.

What should I do?

Let her go to her dads and treat when she gets home?
Send her to her dads and pick up a treatment on the way and let him do it? (problem is I wouldn't really trust him to do it right and would have to do it again tonight anyway)
Keep her with me for the day and treat her as soon as we get home this afternoon?

I guess I'm not sure of the correct etiquette here - thanks!!

Send her to her father's and tell him that she has lice that need treating. It's not really cricket to send out and infectious child without telling people that she is infectious.

Take the visible headline out and treat tonight. And what onyx said tell the dad he might surprise you.

I'd send her to Dad's with the treatment stuff, and encourage him to read the instructions carefully and follow it closely ... he's obviously not going to want live lice getting around his place and hair too!

Hopefully he'll rise to the challenge, and do a great job.

And I'd grab a nit comb and do a thorough comb with conditioner tonight.

I would pick up some treatment and send her with it and tell him to d it. Then as peanutter said, go through again tonight with conditioner and a nit comb.

Thanks for the replies ladies - I would have told her dad either way, definitely not something I'd be keep a secret!

I picked a treatment up on the way over and had a chat with him about it when I got there. He just flat out said no to doing the treatment which really annoyed me - but decision made I guess! I'll do it after I pick her up this afternoon.

I did use conditioner and the comb this morning to check - I just didn't have time to do a thorough job. I found just a single big one and no eggs so hopefully she won't be too infectious.

Ash, I feel your pain.

After about two years nit/lice free, DD picked them up from somewhere a few weeks ago. I have treated us all multiple times since, washed all bedding in hot water, used natural treatments, medicated treatments, everything...I think we have finally got them, but it almost drove me nuts!!!!!!!!!!

I hate nits thing is, if any got left at her father's, then she could get re-infected. Parenting is the good & the bad.

Yuck! I hate combing out lice - I only found one more live one but there were so many eggs!!! I can't believe how many 2 little critters can lay.

All done now though - if she gets any from visiting her dad I'll make sure he does something about it. Now that she's had them I'll be checking at least once a week for a while.
