What did you do for the first birthday?

DD will be 1 in June. I can't believe it! It seems so close, even though it's ages away lol. And being the little party planner that I am, I'm already thinking about what to do for it.

I'm after some ideas though, what did you do? It'll be at our place because we have loads of space and it's quite a drive for most people. There'll be very few other babies and young children, it's mostly for family and friends who've been there for us and DD throughout the year. Kind of a Hooray, we did it! kind of thing.

She's too young to really have favourite things, except a pink and brown striped taggy blankie lol. So I can't really think of a theme, or what to do. I'm lost, and not liking it lol, I usually have plenty of party ideas and I want it to be great for the little button

I made cupcakes and got these edible stickers off eBay that said Happy 1st Birthday. The whole theme was 1st birthday with all the plates, cups & napkins that matched and had no. 1 on it - again I think I got them from eBay. The cake was a double layer of sponge cut out in a 1 with white butter cream and smarties all down the sides. I'd maybe have a few things out for the older kids and you could possibly do games for them, but I think the focus should be on the really little people. So I guess having toys/ equipment out for them and the adults will help them to interact.

We had two parties for DS - in different States with family & close friends and then play group. The mistake I made for both was spending too much time on the food. U went to lots of effort (for the adults) and it was just wasted.

    Good luck.

I'm already thinking about the newbie's 1st birthday

For Moo we hired the local community centre as we invited heaps of people and had lots of kids! We hired some play equipment from a toy library which was a hit. Made all the food which was just the usual finger foods, as well as some sandwiches from a bakery that we'd ordered. Didn't have a theme but made sure everything was brightly coloured, including the plastic plates etc. There were no games but did have the ipod going.

    Happy planning!

Lol Hestia, it's never too early to plan a party! Sounds like Moo's party was great, your new little guy will love his

Nat, I didn't even think of having just '1' as a kind of theme lol. Seems obvious now! A 1 cake would be quite easy too - easier than a character or something anyway. I could make it all pink and pale brown anyway (that sounds awful lol, but it does look good!) and kind of have the same colours for it all and just make it all about 1

    Thanks girls

We are just having 1st theme too but with a frog cake. Just a sausage sizzle in the park with a few extra nibbles and party bags

We just had a party at home and invited close friends and family. I did a fairy theme, mainly the cake was decorated in pastel colours with fairies on it. I hired a jumping castle for the older kids and it was finger food. Very basic. DD had her afternoon nap as per usual and most people left about 2 pm

I think the 1 theme is lovely and I think you had your answer a bit in your post. Pink and brown decorations. Have a BBQ, that way it keeps some of the men busy and saves you having to do all the work

DD is also 1 in June and I'm also planning

I've decided on a Rainbow theme. I'm hoping to have it at our local bowls club where my mum is a member, and I'd the weather is nice, the grown ups can play some barefoot bowls on the big green, and the kiddies can play on the small green. A few of mums friends at the bowls club run events where they teach you how to bowl, get games set up etc so I'm thinking of that.

Food wise, I'm going to (HOPING to) make a 6 layer rainbow sponge, have those cute jelly oranges, a rainbow fruit platter, 'rainbow' sandwiches (tomato, orange capsicum, cheese, spinach, chicken/mayo mix dyed blue (lol!) and beetroot), milkshakes in all different colours....and still thinking of other things.

Decoration wise it's pretty easy, I'll just grab some stuff off of eBay.

we had rainbows and unicorns for DD's first birthday - and just had a get together at home with cake and party food. she was starting to get mobile, so had a ball crawling with the kids inside and making a mess with the food outside!

PZ - did you see the rainbow jelly i made for DD's first birthday? it was a huge hit!

Thanks for the ebay tip everyone, I never think to look there! Found loads of stuff that would go with a pink/brown/white "1" theme. Now I'm working out what can go where in the house and under the veranda lol. Bit keen already! Also started designing invites hehe.

PZ, I reckon we're a bit lucky this year, 16/06 is on a Saturday Very happy I won't have to stand in the one spot in the corner of our veranda where we get mobile service, taking birthday calls as they can all come and see her

had to do something to distract myself while i was sick!!

is it bad to admit the bulk of her baptism was planned well before her birth?? WELL beforehand?? friends interstate were able to book flights and everything. even her gown was ordered and paid for before her arrival lol

i like planning - as soon as one thing is over, i NEED to plan something new - or i get horribly depressed with nothing to look forward to lol

Lol! I didn't have a baptism to plan, that would've kept me occupied waiting for DD to arrive!

Honestly I reckon for me it's because I'm all about control and planning, I love spreadsheets lol.
