I posted about our cat in January - my question was did you think she is elderly or anxious. A few things have happened since then so we are quite certain she is old... and she's making us anxious.
She dropped a whole lot of weight really quickly. She was overweight for awhile there, so we had her on obesity management biscuits, and was losing steadily, but then last month she dropped a lot of weight and started vomiting as well. I took her to the vet, who gave her a shot of antibiotics in case it was just gastro, but he said if she didn't improve to bring her back for blood tests. She's getting thinner, despite being on a new diet, and the last couple of days she just looks so old and creaky. The soonest the vet can see her is Monday. The tests will be for thyroid issues, kidney failure (she's not drinking heaps of water though so I doubt it is that) or, euphemistically, "other serious internal issues". By which I assume he means cancer.
I'm trying to stay positive but am so sad to think that my girl is on her way out.
I now feel like I should have posted this in the boohoo room as I'm sitting here tearing up, but I just wonder if anyone has some good news stories about old pets having a second wind and living til they're 25. Just for a little hope to see me through til Monday?
My old pony was on the point of death but the farmer from down the road gave him a bottle of XXXX and he lived another 10 years. Probably best not to give your cat XXXX but if there is an identifiable illness your vet can get puss medicated and feeling better.
:-( Similar thing happened to our dog, he had a thyroid condition and unfortunatley the medication didn't help him, so we euthanaised him. He was a great dog & we still talk about him often but it was the best thing to do. I hope your cat can get well
My mum took our old cat to the vet when she was 19 thinking that she was going to be coming home alone. She was so skinny - literally a bag of bones and had spent a day and night straight in her bed. She got a dose of anti inflammatories to deal with her arthritis, a course of general antibiotics and a vitamins shot, which continued for the rest of her life. She improved dramatically and got a bit of her old bounce back, and gained weight although was never the beautiful sleek puddy she had been. She eventually passed away in her sleep but pain-free at 27.
Could she have developed an allergy? My girl started vomiting suddenly about 2 years ago (when she was 10) so we had to put her on a special diet cat food (Hills Prescription) and she's been fine since! She isn't happy with not getting all the yummy treats and food she used to get, but she's not sick anymore.
It's not great news. Tink had to be sedated to have the blood taken, and while she was out he shaved her neck to check her pulses as he picked up a heart murmur about 18 months ago. She has a jugular pulse, which along with the murmur and the sudden weight loss is indicative of a worsening heart condition. Probably 6 - 12 months but then if she gets much worse during that time we will have to make the humane decision for her. She's still not eating much but as her kidneys and liver are fine and there's no cancer at least she's not in pain - she's just running out of steam as her heart is not doing what it should.
At least I have some time left with her for fuzzy snuggles. Thanks for your support. xox
Oh I'm sorry to hear her heart is not doing so well. Make the most of the time you have left with her and don't forget to take some pictures hon.
We didn't get enough only a couple of picks. We regret that now.
We're having our darling Tink euthanased tomorrow morning. She has barely eaten for the past week - she licks the gravy off her Whiskas, but even that got vomited up yesterday. Called the vet to see if they could do anything else and he said to keep her calm and comfortable and hydrated as much as possible, and to bring her in first thing tomorrow. I have been crying so much I just hope I'm all dried up tomorrow. I know it's the humane thing to do for her, but after 14 years I'm having trouble imagining life with a cat-shaped hole in it. Thanks for listening.
