One of our neighbours has a duck. Or two. Can't really tell on which side it is, because of the echo around the place. One side neighbour has chooks, which are usually fairly quiet, today they've been very 'chatty', so I think it is the same house. We are suburbia. Does anyone know what the go is with being allowed to have ducks? I like ducks, don't get me wrong, I just don't necessarily want to hear them from inside my house, or have my children complain they can't go to sleep because of a duck quacking. I don't want to be one of 'those awful neighbours'.
Every council is different, ring them in the morning and ask what the go is, you don't have to tell them where exactly straight away, give them a little time. If it is there first day/s there they might settle in and be less noisey.
I've got absolutely no idea, but I agree with Kazzo in perhaps trying to ring the council. I had to post and let you know what your comment of the kids complaining they can't sleep because of quacking has actually made me laugh for the first time today I too live in suburbia, and the thought of DD not being able to sleep due to ducks is quite an interesting thought (although it wouldn't be that way if it was actually happening). I hope a solution is found soon.
We live semi-rural, our block and one neighbour is an an acre, the other side is 3 1/4 acre blocks, and we are allowed 20 'fowl' but yes our 4 ducks are noisy devils and i often worry they annoy the neighbours, though they tell me not and its 'nice noise'.
Even if your council says only 3/4 birds the noise level is so different with chooks and ducks.. maybe in the mean time white noise like a fan would help for the kids.
Well the duck(s) (and chickens) were only 'noisy' for one day. The next day it was raining, and all was quiet. Dunno if that was because of the rain or what, but doesn't matter. Chickens make such a different noise (obviously, der), it's so much less 'intrusive' than duck noise. Or maybe that's because I grew up (in suburbia) listening to our neighbour's chickens? (which I just realised, so maybe that is why I don't mind the chickens?)
Anyway, the Man and I were talking about the duck(s) and seemingly lack of sound the next day, and he seems to think that they only have some critters for a day or few at the most, before they are gone again. Not sure if they are a half-way minding house type place for lost and displaced critters, or they eat well. Oh well, just thought I would update on the duck-situ.
