How to clean a knobbly hairbrush?

I have, like I am sure a gazillion other chicks, one of those hairbrushes with the little knobby bits on the end of each bristle. How do you manage to clean all the fluff and hair off them (and the paddle brushes too while I'm asking!) without resorting to a pair of nail scissors and tweezers on each bristle? They look awful! Thanks.

I used to spray a bit of hairspray over my brushes, wait a couple of minutes, and most of it would just lift off in one big clump

I just use a large comb to get the hair out, then soak it in very hot water with dish detergent. Cleans up fine.
