our beautiful dog actually bit me. I went to pick up DD cup from him and he went me at my arm. Big gauge about 5-10 cent size. Been up to the hospital, saw midwife and nurse and had a booster tetnis all cleaned up and storey strips on the bite area.
Last night when it happened we were determined the dog was going - we no longer trusted him. DD climbs on him, pulls him, constantly fits him for his toy or a rag in his mouth and not once has he ever blinked an eye at her and i do something simple and get bitten. The dog isn't desexed and Midwife said he would b different if we had him done
24 hours on tho we are thinking what if we got him done, would he change? Could he be jelous that i am expecting a baby - which is one reason th epet shop gave us. We know he knows he did the wrong thing as he hasn't come near the for today and has had a sulky look.
Anyone had any experience with this? Any ideas on the cost of desexong a dog in NSW
No idea, but if you decide to get rid of him, how will you do it? A rescue organisation will only take dogs if they're desexed. A pound will put him down. It's best to get him neutered and maybe consult a vet or dog trainer about his behaviour.
hope your arm heals quickly. Dogs can bite for a number of reasons, he might have felt threatened, or was being possessive, or at the moment is a bit stressed out with all the changes (a new baby on the way) that are happening. I'd seek the assistance of a qualified dog trainer, and yep get him desexed, as it will stop (after a little while) testosterone racing around in his body. The change won't be instant, but it should help.
Desexing costs depend on the vet, and are usually weight based. Neutering (males) is cheaper than spaying (females). At a rough guess (extremely rough!) I'd say about $100? Even just ring your local vet, they should be able to give you an estimate over the phone. Also check with your local council, some offer vouchers for desexing.
We had a dachshund for 14 years. He bit my mum, my sister and a neighbour during this time. He was abused and very protective of my mother.
He bit my mother when she went to pass him to my dad on the very first day. He had never been around a male before. He was secluded in a kennel as he wasn't "show-worthy" so he was just fed and ignored. He simply was scared.
Second time was my sister. He woke up to see her face right near his. Again, he was scared and reacted.
The third time was a neighbour walked into our house without permission (he had dementia). He was scared as the neighbour tried to hit him with a walking stick.
Try to think back. Was he protecting your DD? Did you come up to him unexpectedly?
Dachshunds usually are very protective of their "family", especially their favourite and can react when they feel unsafe or their family is unsafe.
Also, have you ruled out he is unwell? Is he losing his sight? How old is he? Also, stress can be a factor.
Dogs are always a risk but IMO, very worth it. You will need to monitor him closely from now on if you keep him and I would recommend training so he is aware of who is head of his pack as they can believe they are top dog.
he is 3. We never had him done because we got him from a breeder and is a pure breed. The idea was to find him a mate, allow them some 'special time' and keep a puppy down the line.
at the time i had called at him from the back door and told him no and then went out and grabbed the cup - maybe 5 or 6 meters. DH and DD were in the shed at the time and came out just as it happened.
We are getting him snipped tomorrow (hubby wanted to ask about a 2 for 1 deal and get done also). We have spoken to a few people who have given us some advice and techniques. I have been told by the sounds of the incident and other things that he is more likely to bite me then anyone else in the house (thats comforting lol). going to see how everything goes
Thats kind of been mentioned. They said that the dog sees himself as second in the pack below DH and then protector of DD and i am invading the space. That i am the one likely to be bitten again before anyone els win the house. However as the dog sees himself as the protector of DD he may try to guard her intensely in the yard so we have to watch that.
DH is building him a bigger pen area in the yard followed by fencing of the back yard more so we can keep the dog and DD apart if required. We are going to try tackling the dog thinking I'm 'nothing' by being the one who controls his food and being more dominant with him.
