Low blood sugar and general unwell feeling

    Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light or had a simlilar situation? I am hungry all the time during this pg and have a general unwell feeling (not m/s or naursea, just generally unwell). I find I feel better if I eat regularly, like hourly but also am suffering from low blood sugar. I nearly passed out today at lunch. I usually eat at 12 but got caught in a meeting and didn't end up eating until close to 1pm, my last snack was a banana at about 11. I am a little concerned b/c last pg I suffered from GD and I fear I am headed down the same track already (I don't recall feeling like this last pg, although it was over 5 years ago). I am thinking of going to a dietician to help me plan what I should be eating - do you think that is a good idea? I was following the MB12WBT before I fell pg (not strictly) and I ate between 1200-1500 cals per day & exercised regularly, so I know that I am definately eating alot more calories than I was just a month ago... ATM I've stopped all exercise (except yoga) due to my recurrent m/c's and tried listening to my body what it wanted me to eat but I feel terribly unwell and are unable to sometimes decide what to eat. Should I go to the GP and get a referral or can I go direct to a dietician? I don't think the hosptial I am going to offers any pg diet advice (I couldn't find it on their website) however I have an pre-natal app in a months time.

I'd go to the doctor & get a referral. Or call the hospital and see if they have a service. I'd get your blood checked for everything, including iron & vitamin d.

It sounds like you need more protein and animal fats. Start taking nuts, cheese, miso soup, hummus to work. Eat something small as you need it (say every hour). Drink lots of water. Have eggs for breakfast if you can. Stay away from things that pump your blood sugar up, like bananas unless you have them with low sugar, full fat, natural yoghurt.

Lok up the Brewer pregnancy diet. It's the best diet to help a growing bub whilst keeping mum healthy too. Baby needs a lot of protein to grow cells. The Brewer diet also reduces the chances of IUGR and pre-eclampsia.

Thanks so much for your reply! I will look into the Brewer Diet today. I have an appt with the FS today but doubt he will refer me anywhere so I'll make an appt with the GP. I have eaten this morning weet bix with milk an apple and had a big glass of water and feel ok. I have a slight headache but hoping that goes by drinking more water.

    Thanks LMS x

I am feeling ok today. I had a sandwich for lunch and some rice crackers and am drinking more water but now I have a shocking headache and my tummy feels weird! I guess I am just full of complaints atm!

Definately see a doctor. Do you have a thermometer or blood pressure monitor at home? Might be useful for just being able to check things yourself.

Have you had basic blood checks for iron, thyroid etc?

i agree with seeing a doctor. sorry to hear you've been feeling so unwell

if you do end up with GD again then i'm pretty sure it takes a bit longer for the condition to develop (i was told that if it exists so early in the PG then it was probably type 2 rather than being a PG thing ). definitely get your BP checked though & if you still have a monitor to test your BSL you could try taking them after eating just to see what's happening?

hopefully the GP will order a range of BT so you can see where everything is at

No blood pressure monitor here. I had my blood pressure checked at six weeks & it was fine. I didn't get my iron levels checked or thyroid though.
sloane - interesting about the GD developing later. My GF got her checked in really early pg showed up & she is on GD meds I think. I think her Dr was too early / jumping the gun tbh. I borrowed a BSL last time but my mum has type 2 so I can test at her house.
I felt ok today until about 2 pm then I had a sleep. I feel better than yesterday but still have a headache. I hope it is nothing to be worried about b/c I really want an uneventful pg (not too much to ask hey?!) Thanks again. We go on holidays on Saturday for a week so perhaps taking it easy will help?

Rhi, I am find I need to also eat...not all the time but just about and if I dont, not only does MS comes with a vengeance but I feel like crap. I seem to be needing carbs and protein mostly, so I try to stick to low fat and lower GI carbs if possible
I am a borderline low blood sugar person even when not pregnant and I turn into a nightmare when I dont eat regularly, so you can imagine what I am like when pg.
Dont forget that tiredness is a big part of the first trimester too, so that prob contributes to your general unwellness.

I would go see your Dr and check your blood levels for sure (you can never be too safe) and I am going to look into this Brewer diet myself as I don't want to put on too much.
A dietician doesnt sound like a bad idea either.

    Hope you feel better

Thanks sydney moose for your reply! Definately craving carbs and am trying to stick with low GI. I felt a lot better yesterday & today - still alittle lightheaded but much better must have been a rough patch there. I am going to try to work this one out for myself for a week & if no change I'll see my GP I am just putting it down to being older and having a child to look after so resting is a lot harder. I did go to bed early last night & even though I woke earlier I think that helped alot.
