Awwww, enjoy your new addition to the family.

That's lovely.
I don't want to be a downer, but toy dogs like Poodles and Maltese shouldn't be taken from their mother before 10-12 weeks. It can lead to long term health and behavioural problems. I recommend you taking the puppy to a vet and puppy school to learn how best to overcome this. Hopefully, the puppy wasn't from a puppy farm and not removed earlier.
I hope you all enjoy the new addition to your family.
nope, we actually met the breeder and everything!! She's a very well adjusted puppy and fitting in really nicely with us and it's only been 3 days. I personally believe 8 weeks is fine. Some dogs wean off their mother earlier than others too don't forget. This isn't our first dog either and we've done the whole puppy school thing before.
I do think your post was a bit negative TBH. I don't really agree with what you've just said. This post was a 'wohoooo' post actually. Perhaps I should have put it in that section to avoid negative comments.![]()
She's a cutie Shanti!
Thanks heaven!
how lovely shanti.... new puppies are fun fun fun
I apologise for offending you. Puppy breeding is a cause I take very seriously so I can come across as dogmatic when I dont mean to (no pun intended). There are many disreputable, official "breeders" where people dont get to meet the parents or see what condition they're kept in. As for age to remove from mother, weaning isn't the only indicator of readiness. We may need to agree to disagree. But this is your thread, so I'll butt out.
I'm sorry if I put a downer on your woo hoo. I hope you enjoy your new addition for many years.
I agree 100% with L&B's intention re puppy farms etc. They're something that truly disgust me and I think its great you got your baby from a reputable breeder. We really need laws to stop petshop sales etc.
As for the 8 or 12 weeks for separation from their litter mates and mother though, this is something I looked into in a big way last year when we brought a puppy over to Perth from Victoria. His breeder said he would be ready to go at 8 weeks and TBH initially I was horrified - a tiny baby whose first trip away from his mum, brothers and sisters would be a long drive (they're rural Victoria), and then on a plane for a few hours. She assured me it was the best time but I did further digging. According to one school of thought (and it seems to be a popular school!) puppies go through "fear/terror" periods throughout the early months and around 12 weeks is one of those periods. So, our baby flew at 8 weeks and was well and truly settled in with his new family by that 12 week phase. He seemed happy and well adjusted right from the beginning, although if he keeps chewing up the reticulation my DH might be having some sterner words with him
Enjoy your new fluffball Shanti. I hope your retic stays safe ;-)
Well, I'm happy mine isn't from a puppy farm then![]()
