ILs want to take DD down to the beach house this weekend. I'm torn and need some sage opinions. That's you guys.
DH is going away from Friday night til Monday night (for something different), so I'll have the kids by myself for the weekend. The ILs plan on leaving tonight or tomorrow and coming back Saturday.
Pros:
- DH is away so one less kiddie will be easier for me to look after in general
- DS easier to handle on his own - less squabbles
- Can have a nap when DS has a sleep
- One-one time with DS
- Good experience for DD, she loves it down there, can spend time with her grandparents
- Easier for me to handle swimming on my own
Cons:
- She's sick atm and I kind of want her close - she's been licking her lips and they've gotten all dermatitis-ish and possibly infected, so she might need some ABs and/or a steroid cream - the MIL will be fine with it but you know how it is...
- DS will be a bit bored without her
- I won't get any extra sleep at night time as DS is the one who is hard to handle overnight
- DD will miss mainly music, another day of kinder and also a swimming lesson (she missed kinder yesterday as my mum decided she was too tired... another story )
- I will miss her!
She is 3.5yrs and has been down there heaps - but only once without me and DH. But she loved it when she went with just the grandparents last time. Had a ball.
I would send her hun! Just let your IL's know what to do if her lips get worse, or even better, take her the chemist and send her with some cream now. I am sure she will absolutely LOVE and feel so special to have some one on one time. I found it hard the first time DD went to my ILs for the weekend but it was great for us to have one on one with DS, plus she had a blast!
If she is sick, then I'd be inclined not to let her go or go to the Drs and get the all clear. The other thing is missing out on her usual activities. Obviously if it can't be avoided then that is fine but it is a PITA to do make-up classes and then their routines are out of whack. If you are (well if it were me) comfortable with letting those two things go, then I'd send her.
I think one on one time with the grandparents outweighs missing out on activities - I know my girls prefer to spend time with theirs than do things. After all those relationships are important and it is good for them to develop them while they are young.
I would go to the chemist and get whatever medications are required in case she gets worse. Even if she does get worse there's nothing stopping them from coming back early is there?
I also think DS will enjoy having some special Mummy time too so I would let her go.
I would send her provided she perks up a bit before its time to go. DDs stayed at my parents last Friday overnight and when I picked them up the next day found out that DD1 had been up vomitting throughout the night. She was perfectly happy with my mum looking after her, but I felt awful that I wasn't there for her. I'm sure she'll have a great time just her and her grandparents, and likewise your son having mum all to himself.
Missing activities on the weekend is annoying, but if you're anything like me that's a constant state anyway so I figure its pretty unavoidable for themto miss something here and there.
if not, I'd be leaning towards letting her go, provided I was sure that PIL will be able to monitor her, so that if she did get sick or upset they would respond promptly and appropriately, and (if needed) bring her home to me.
weekends away with grandparents are such special magical times - I still remember the 2 or 3 days I had by myself with my grandparents ... having so much undivided attention, particularly in a special setting is the stuff that childhood memories are made of ... she won't remember that she was a bit sick or that she missed her groups, she'll remember the fun things she did with them, and that is such a great gift
and I think it will be wonderful for you to have a lighter (gorgeous) load while DH is away and you're UTD ... you'll be able to give DS some exclusive attention too, which he'll lap up, and I think you all will benefit from it.
I must be a sook and go against the grain and say no, as I could not cope with boys being away from me overnight and not at home. Also she is sick so I would want to keep a close eye.
I am sure you will make the right decision. I can see everyone else's point too but I would be too worried myself.
If I ask her, she'll say yes! Selfishly it's also going to be difficult for me because DS will be upset that he can't go too - and he won't understand why. And he will continue to be upset until she comes home.
FIL sent me a text asking me to call this morning when I could, and I knew it would be about this. I didn't call and he called DH about something else and then asked if we'd decided about the weekend and DH said we decided no, as he was concerned it would just make things harder for me by leaving DS bored and needing stimulation... Plus he is here until late Friday night and they are back Saturday afternoon so it would only really help me for Friday night and she'd miss her activities.
So then I called FIL and said I was also worried about her lips and getting another script filled for her so we decided no, she won't go. Instead they are going to take both for me after church on Sunday so I can have a decent rest. And do the child care pick up on Monday so I don't need to rush home from work.
