Went to the physio yesterday for my very sore back and shoulders. I think I pulled muscles during labour and birth. It makes it very painful to bend forward, makiny changing nappies a little tricky. At least the Man is good at not letting me pick up anything heavier than Mack, and also changing Mack if I need. Anyway, physio worked on my back, trying to relax that big, triangular muscle, as it is all cramped up, taped it up, and gave me a stretch to do. Next appointment is on Monday.
The physio also said that I have very slight scoliosis (sp?), you know, where the spine curves side to side. He really didn't go into it. Would this be just a pg-caused thing, or more like something I've always had and just not known about? Sorry, I really don't know anything about it. And is it likely to cause issues down the track?
And probably the best thing I can do, along with the stretching, is walking?
My understanding of scoliosis is that you would have had it already but perhaps pregnancy aggrivated it? Not sure though, I could be way off.
Did the physio give you any exercises to do to strengthen the muscles? Cause that would also help along with stretching. Hope it's something you can sort out quickly. Back pain is horrid
Miss Dee; thanks. No other excercises but for the stretching. My next appointment is Monday, so I guess that I will probably get other exercises as my back improves. I just remembered, the physio said something else about my spine, like it was compressed or something, but that he also wouldn't work on that issue until this muscle is 'fixed', as it could be the cause of the compression (or whatever it was; sorry, I forget exactly what he said).
That seems really strange to me that they didn't suggest any excercises. If the muscles are weak and remain weak, the problem won't ever get fixed and while stretching will help, it's not going to make them stronger itms? At your next appointment ask if there's anything you can do to strengthen the muscles. One I can think of off the top of my head is doing squats with a gym ball against a wall.
Probably being only a few days post partum was the reason for not giving an exercise program yet. The extra hormones too mean that exercise too early can lead to more damage.
It's not a preg thing I'm pretty sure- it comes about when the spine is still growing I think, ie adolescence or childhood.
Oddly enough when I was having my epidural put in for DD's birth the anesthetist told me I had it too. Probably advanced labour was not the best time to tell someone these sorts of things though.
Still got more physio to go (already have two appointments booked for next week), and am annoyed at myself for not being able to have acupuncture . The physio said he was going to do it, and I started to get very nervous (I am petrified of needles for those who didn't know), and even though he explained it, I couldn't do it. He put one needle in, which was okay for maybe a minute, then it hurt like I find all needles do, and I didn't think I could continue. And I cried. Dammit. Acupuncture is one aspect of trying to fix my back and shoulders, so without it, we are stuck doing only two treatment methods instead of three, which no doubt will mean more time to heal.
