    Cool New Fish... Excited

We have a 4ft tank with 5 goldfish and 1 sucker fish in it, we are adding to this shortly with some more goldies for the kids.

    BUT

The other day i found an add on gumtree for a MURRAY COD, it's our favorite fish and we always said we wanted to get one so i am so so excited to say we picked him up this morning!

At the moment he is in a small tank on his own with plenty of hiding places whiles we look for and buy another 4ft (or bigger) tank for him.
The new tank will be decked out and i want to make it look gorgeous, a nice backdrop, drift wood, plenty of hiding places and plenty of rock to create some holes for him to hide.

Our old tank is looking a little bare so i am really looking forward to getting some plants (plastic) for that aswell and getting them all spiffy.

Does anyone know of places to get good quality but not overly expensive fish tank ornaments, i really want to make these the focus of our kitchen now we have our gorgeous new friend.

Still looking for a name for him too, am really excited to have him and so is DP... he couldn't believe i'd finally found one and for only $15, it's his favorite fish.
We even have cod stickers on our boat

Ohhhh i want to call him doc yarrum but not sure DP would agree....

Are you sure you don't want to call him Murray?

Hehe i had thought about Murray but i think nearly every cod is called Murray.

Doc Yarrum is Murray Cod backwards but i doubt DP will like it.

Might just let the girls pick a name i think, he's going to get quite big and strong over the years so something manly and strong would suit.

I can't wait to watch him get bigger and take over a big tank, it's so exciting... silly really but exciting.

Anyone else have any tips for keeping bigger fish, or anyone else have a murray cod?

Muzza! That's a strong name if I ever did hear one. I reckon any Muzza could beat the crap out of anyone who tried to crack on to his woman

That's exciting. What rate do they grow at? If you do upgrade your tank try and get one that is wide as well is long so he has plenty of room to turn as he gets bigger. You'll have to post pics (well links to picks). Can't wait to have the time and money to get my 500L tank up and running again, think it might be a couple of years though .

One day I'd love to have an Australian native tank with rainbows and gobies, I'll keep dreaming for now

My fish have odd names. I have a clown loach named Betty-Sue, a bala shark named Hoo Ha Ha (it's a long story.) and a cat fish named Kitty. Our yabby is Pinchy but I suspect that there would be loads of yabbies with this name.

I think Doc Yarrum is a cool name!

Does it have something to do with Finding Nemo?

Are we sure he's a he?

Do we need a unisex name?

I would call a cod "good with chips" - that's why DH only has small fish in our tank (tetras, clown loaches etc). The man has no sense of naming style.

Come out this morning and the girls say "good morning murray" then Miss A says "silly Murray what are you doing" so i get down to look at him and he's on his side

Have moved him to the big tank with the air cord and propped him against a plant, he's still breathing and get some energy, swims off then tries to right himself so when i see him not balancing i prop him up against the plant again and let him rest.
He seems to be trying to balance himself out a lot more so HOPEFULLY he pulls through, girls are devestated.

Not sure what could be wrong, he has fresh water, we've not over fed him and he was in the tank alone, the only thing we didn't have was an air rock.
I need to get a new PH tester but we don't do it with our other fish as they get tank water with no yucky additives and they seem fine, we didn't have a heater in the tank as the lady said he doesn't need it.

I feel horrible for poor Murray - the girls love him already & DP and i have always wanted a cod for a pet

ETA - the lovely lady we got him off called this morning (after i sent her a sorry for bothering you text) and we currently have him in a shallow tank with the air cord and a bit of salt - hopefully some highly oxygenated water and salt 9which helps with stress) will be good for him and we might just save him... he is still breathing so i guess we wait and see.

DD1 is sitting at his tank side and singing happy fishy songs to him, she's quite upset at the thought of him dying.. so i'm being good mum and am on constant fish watch

Come on MURRAY we need you to pull through.

    Update: Murray is still alive
Still sluggish but he is upright and balancing out on his own.

Going to buy another air stone just for his small tank and see how he goes.

Also trying to find his big tank ASAP.
