Nipple so sore ... I'm feeling deflated
Hi Guys,
Its me AGAIN! Seriously, I wish i didnt have to post here.
Anyway, my left nipple is soo sooo sore, it has a blister type sore which looks like theres 2 blood clots in there. Happened 2 days ago, and I tried latching DD on but the pain is soo unbearable I had to deattach her quite upruptly.
I've let her down and she is always hungry and I cannot offer her another breast.
She has just been feeding off one breast and not getting enough. I have tried expressing but only get 60mls which she still gets hungry after.
Argh I feel like Ive let her down and this morning resorted in formula which also did not work as she vomitted all of it out.
I dont know what to do, DD seems very hungry, expressing is sore and painful and I am worried my milk is drying up on my left boobs.
What is it that I have on my nipple? Blocked duct? and how can I relieve the pain?
How can I keep the supply up so when the sore is gone I can offer it to DD again?
I've never had this many issues with DD1 so feeling very deflated.
Ouch!
You are having a really hard time. What a great job you're doing working through all this
Have you seen an LC at all? It sounds like you need some one-on-one assistance from someone with expertise and a medical bent.
Aw hun, what a rough road you're traveling! I'm so sorry you guys are still struggling. It must be even harder knowing it was easier with DD1.
It's hard to say but it doesn't sound like a blocked duct - if it has a blood blister type thing, it might be a problem with her latch, causing a squeeze on your nipple. How is her attachment? Can you remember, before the blister appeared, was it painful when she attached?
You will be able to build up your supply again if you're resting that nipple for a while, try not to worry about it. It might need a bit of a rest to heal if it is too painful to attach DD. Try and pump if you can, that will help maintain your supply. You could try using a nipple shield, that might help?
If you have to offer her the good breast every hour or two during the day - within a day or so it should be making enough!
As far as the sore is concerned, it could be an abrasion sort of blister (remember - as much nipple in as you can), but if you have a fever or feel generally crap as well as sore-nipple-miserable then please see a doctor - breast abscesses are possible and can require antibiotics.
Can you attach away from the sore. When I had a nasty crack that kept bleeding I used to twist my nipple so the crack was to the side of baby's mouth, so it wasn't being aggravated by young or gums.
It sounds like an attachment issue. Blocked ducts are generally hard painful lumps in the breast.
Hang in there. Your supply is still largely driven by hormones in the early weeks so you will be able to build up that side again quickly. I would just feed from the unaffected side and express the other for comfort. Remember your boobs are two days behind, so she might fuss while your good boob catches up to her demand.
Just wanted to give you a great big hug, hun. We have had similar problems here with horrendously sore nipples. Little mouths, tongue tie, milk blebs, mastitis, cracks and bleeding but we've hung in there. My girls are almost ten weeks old and it really has only been in the last few weeks where I am happy to feed any time without that sense of dread about how painful it's going to be. I hated feeding but now, I am so so glad that I persevered. It took a while but we are getting there. Hang in there and big hugs, you are doing a fabulous job
