I have some legal documents which must be witnessed by a JP. I don't personally know anyone who is a JP and I'm unsure how to go about finding one! Does anyone know, please?
Also, how much does a JP charge? I assume they don't do it out of the kindness of their hearts and also need to cover the cost of some sort of registration?
Thank you!
(Sorry, Mods, struggled to figure out where to put this one!)
I looked in the phone book I think, or perhaps you could ring the information centre in your town and ask them.
It didn't cost me anything for him to sign my papers.

If you go to your local court house they will have a list of names - may even have one on site lol. Otherwise solicitors offices, banks, and the police station are usually hot spots of JPs.
All the JPs I know do it as a community service, no charge.
Google Finding a Justice of the Peace. Each State has a list on the internet and you can search for those in a suburb close to you. All they give are phone numbers so you can call them and ask.
Most JP's do not charge as they have volunteered to provide a service to the community. My DH is a JP Qual for Queensland even though we live in Victoria at the moment. Back to QLD in January.
Are you sure you need a JP? If it needs to be a certified true copy, I think your local police station staff can do this (but please confirm before going there).
Yep, Police Officers and Pharmacists can sign certified copies of documents and witness documents like passport applications and things, if that is helpful.
Depends on what document it is that you need sworn/certified.
There is a difference between an Affidavit and a Statutory Declaration, with regards to who can swear same. Affidavits need people with higher qualifications than a Stat Dec.
There is also a difference between a Justice of the Peace, and a Notary Public, in relation to certifying documents. International documents will usually require a Notary Public, who can charge up to about $45 a page (from memory).
You will need to be careful about what document it is, and make sure you get the right person to swear/certify it.
Here on the gold coast we have jp services in every single shopping centre, they work shifts a couple days a week at certain times. Free. Also the city court house has a jp on duty, get in line. Also free.
They are documents pertaining to medical power of attorney and legal guardianship and the like. They have been prepared by an interstate solicitor who has sent them to me withclear instructions that they must be witnessed by a JP, I'm trying to do as instructed so that I can return them. I am very comfortable signing the documents and I don't feel I need to see a solicitor to do so, just need to find a JP. Thank you for all your advice, I will try googling or perhaps I could phone my nearest courthouse? Does anyone know for sure if pharmacists are JP's??
Our local police station has a JP that comes in on a certain day of the week, someone correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure a pharmacist is not a JP.
