I logged in to my paypal account on Monday morning and straight away saw something odd, I had apparantley made a $200 US "donation" to an unknown website/email address...!!!
I hit cancel straight away, then filed an "unauthorised transaction" claim with paypal. have heard nothing from them...
I changed my passwprds for EVERYTHING I do online.
I couldnt see if the payment had left my bank account yet (is linked)
I went and did all my shopping that I had to do, then came home and what do you know, the $$ are gone, paypal is "holding" them until resolved...
I havent yet contacted my bak but thinking I should do so this morning, went to do it online but they wanted to close my account, that cant happen. all my business stuff goes through that account, everyone has those details to pay into.
gah, so annoying! I want my money back!!
has anyone been through this process before? is there more I can do? anything else I should do??
Catastrophic and I are going through the claim process at the moment but for different reasons. We got sucked in to a co-op with no goods received with about 200 other people. Our claims are with the fraud dept. If u was you I would call them. There are some nice people there but also some really bloody rude ones. Good luck
Mine took about a week to resolved then add the extra 3 days its takes to put the money back into your bank account. It's sucks but you will get it back.
I had one about a month ago.
It took about 10 days for the money to appear back in my PayPal account. Apparently if it is stolen from a linked credit card PayPal transfer funds back onto the card but if it is from a linked bank account you have to transfer it back yourself.
I ended up ringing them and while "brad" in Texas was very lipservicy at least I knew they were dealing with it.
ETA - I just remembered that mine took longer because the offender pretended to refund the money first using a PayPal cheque so it was all on hold while they waited to see if that would bounce - so you should probably get yours back sooner.
I had an unauthorised transaction a few years back and it took about 5 days to be resolved. The bank didn't even get back to me in that time! Paypal were pretty good about it and fixed it up.
I know the bank I work for would refer you to Paypal first to resolve, then if you have no joy there the bank investigates. Horrible thing to have happen, especially that sort of amount I hope it's all sorted nice and quickly for you.
ETA- it sounds like you have done all you can for now (changed passwords, reported to Paypal). There really isn't anything more you can do aside from wait for Paypal to complete their investigation, unless your bank says otherwise (I can only speak to what we would say at the bank I work at).
Same thing happened to us but I had apparently brought something, not donated. Paypal froze my account and thankfully the money was returned after about a week. I changed all my passwords after that. I found it really scary because you think of Paypal being a 'safe' way to do transactions but I have now heard of it happening to heaps of people.
Thanks everyone,
most of the feedback I've been getting seems positive, I wll get my money back...eventually..
Went to the bank and spoke to someone there, they said all they can do is file an
"unauthorised transaction" against paypal, but was told I would more than likely get my $$ back before I heard back from the bank.
so annoying!!
I have no idea Willow! I was so not happy!
I have had a paypal account for years or so now, first time it has ever happened to me... although now I'm hearing of so many people who it has happened to.
I had my money back in my paypal account (paypal balance of $33) straight away. Yesterday I checked and it has all been returned (the $166.00 that came out of my Bank account) so I have transferred it all back to my back account, gah..another 3 days!!
I love love love paypal!!! I made a claim - different reason but they work super fast, faster than my bank did (you can call your bank as well and ask for a charge back!!) they took 10 days where I was looking at at least a month for my bank. Their resolution office in my experience is fantastic you are in good hands!!
However - I'm off to change my password - haven't in awhile, good to hear your money was returned - paypal didn't just put it in my paypal account but transferred it directly back to my account so that's odd they didn't for you.
I just got a text message from the bank saying they have received my claim and are looking in to it! (could be 10 business days before I hear back from them) LOL
