    Pay rate for tutors???

Does anyone know what the going rate for tutors is these days?

I'm a primary school teacher with a masters in special ed. I am contemplating taking on some tutoring whilst on maternity leave but have no idea what to charge. When I was at Uni (almost 10 years ago), I was getting $20-25 an hour so I would assume rates have risen by now, just not sure how much.

EDIT - I don't want to overcharge by any means, but I don't want to sell myself short either.

Have you tried searching on gumtree for other tutor adverts - that should give you a good idea of what people charge. I was on there the other day and saw lots of ads for various different types of tutor (the the free papers also seem to have lots of tutor adverts)

We have a tutor for 13yo ss in maths. She is fantastic- I think she does work for an agency but we have private arrangement of $40 per hour. I'm pretty sure most tutors charge $50 minimum per hour

    Thanks for the advice.

I did check gumtree, most people seemed to be Uni students studying maths and science offering their services for high schiol maths and a science for around $20-25 an hour - they have no teaching qualifications or experience at all.

Shells - Thanks for sharing your experience. Just another question - do you go to the tutor or do they come to you?

    Re: Pay rate for tutors???

My friend is a high school French teacher she does French tutoring for $40 and all the students come to her. She has been doing it all through maternity leave and does a fair bit (several evenings and sat mornings) - has got all students from word of mouth from when she was teaching (over 3 years ago now).

Uni students usually get away with $20-30/hr. As a qualified, experienced teacher with a masters degree, you could get around $40-50/hr. Sort of depends on how many tutors area available in your area, how much work you want, how much people are willing to pay in your area.

    Unhappy

The tutor comes to us which is lucky because ss would probably refuse to get into the car. She is a uni student as well

Wow. So that's slightly more than I was expecting. We live in a fairly well off area, so I don't think money will be a huge issue for most people. I was wondering whether $35 would be too much, but it seems that would be very reasonable. I'm thinking of saying something around the $50ish mark if there are two students in the group for the hour and a bit more if there are three (if families or groups of families want their kids tutored together - obviously they won't get as much 1:1, but it is a cheaper option.

I'm excited. I think I'll give this a go. It's a good option for me whilst on leave.

Good luck! Our tutor saved my sanity and ss is unbelievably so much better at maths!! I love her!
