Strong smelling urine

DS is 4 months old and exclusively breastfed. I've noticed today that his urine has started to smell really strong. I mean really, really strong. I use cloth nappies, but its definitely not the nappy that smells. What could cause this?

I really noticed this with DD2 (who was exclusively BF) when I ate different things, like how eating asparagus and makes wee really stink. I never pinpointed exactly what caused it but it often became stronger if I'd had spag bog, a Thai curry, lots of onion, garlic, etc.

If it continues, get it checked by your GP but my guess it's just something you ate

Not enough feeds can cause concentrated urine, but teething and sickness often cause it too.

Have the number of wet nappies dropped off at all? If so it could be that his feeds have dropped off and he needs more milk. Otherwise it might be illness as others have said. Have you been on antibiotics or anything? That will do it too.

Subbing too. DD is about the same age and I've noticed it too.

Both my DDs had the worst smelling urine during teething so it could be as innocent as that (neither ever had any other 'symptoms' and got there first teeth around 4months). It could be something strong you've eaten. The main thing to watch for is dehydration - make sure you are offering plenty of milk in this heat and that there is an appropriate amount of wet nappies.

He's not dehydrated, plenty of heavy, wet nappies, normal poohs too.

He hasn't been sick, though he did have his immunisations on Friday.

I spoke to the CHN just now, she didn't really shed any light. Just told me that if he gets a fever to go the doctor.

I think it’s probably pretty normal at this age. They don’t drink as much overnight (well, we live in hope!) And all night is a long time to be in a nappy. (I’m not suggesting any other way BTW - if there’s no poo I wouldn’t change it.) But things are going to be a bit smelly in the morning. I would just let it play out, watch but don’t be too alarmed.

Thanks Barb. We noticed the smell before he went into his night nappy (which does get changed if he poohs), I'd only just put it on after a bath. So anyway, he did get a bit warm, 37.4 so I figured I'd go to doc JIC as we are going away on Friday. He suspects a UTI so had prescribed antibiotics but said not to give them to him until the urine sample results come back.. but I can't get a dang sample! They gave me 4 of the little sticky bags to stick over his penis but they just leak and don't collect any wee!! I've gone through 4 bags and only have about 1/4 teaspoon wee to take to the collection place tomorrow :/

Oh dear lord, this had better be caused by a UTI (or something else treatable) because his urine absolutelu reeks! Worse than diarhea. It has gotten worse, yuk.

Kelly the urine sample was negative and we put it down to teething wee! He cut some teeth a few weeks later and now he's teething again and has stinky wee!

Mine gets they same on and off, smells like ammonia when she had teething symptoms, makes your eyes water sometimes!! Still no tooth though :-(
