Middle names , what made you decide on the name you did for your kids ?
DS middle name is a bit of a family tradition- df and fil both have the same middle name
What sounded the best with first name and avoiding any family members names
We chose family names for our DD's middle names. DD1s middle name was always going to be my middle name. It's also my Mums, Nanas and great grandmas. For DD2 we wanted something from DHs side of the family so chose his Mums first name.
For DD we made a name using the first part of my NANs first name and the second part of DH Nan's first name .. We actually like the name as wellhope DD still likes it when she is older ..
We just went with names that we liked. My sister had mentioned flow, as in syllables, so with DS1, his names go 2, 1, 2 (Toby James Surname), then with DS2, we went 2, 3, 2 (Hamish Benjamin Surname) and with DD we went 4, 1, 2. (Olivia Grace Surname). She really got me stuck on this concept and I kept saying to DH, nooo, it's got to be short in the middle for DD...![]()
We used their great grandfather's name for both boys.
Ds1 has the name of my favourite singer, which happens to be a family name too.
DD1 has the same middle name as me & my mum, which was also my mothers grandmothers middle name.
DS2 has a family name which is shared between my brother, dad & pop.
DD2 has my MIL's name as her middle name. Mil passed away in 2002.
DD3 has my mothers nickname as her middle name. My mum has been called this by her aunts & siblings her whole life.
I'm not particularly a fan of any of my kids middle names, but they were family names and went well with the first names we'd chosen![]()
DS - Having a J middle name is apparently a family tradition on DH's side, so we brainstormed for ages before we found one we both like. It also happens to be my cousin's name, but that didn't affect the decision
DD's first middle name - My mum and I have our mum's names as middle names, so I always planned to give my daughter my name as her middle.
DD's second middle name - Although I'd planned on honouring my nan anyway, when she died while I was pregnant it solidified my decision.
Family names. DS1's is a nod to my mum's family. DS2's is a nod to my dad's side of the family - in both cases DH liked the names as they are/were footy players from his beloved footy team. I let him think that's the origin of their second namesDS3 has DH's name as his second name.
Dd's middle name is actually the name of the band I was listening to while in labour! If we have a son the middle name will be dh's first name.
DD has my great-grandmothers name as her middle name.
This bub will either have FILs name as his middle name (matches well with first name) or my middle name as middle name if its a girl (again, matches well - we are all about the number if syllables here too so it flows!).
I have friends who picked family names and gosh they just do not flow whatsoever (in fact I think they are terrible) but each to their own, everyone has their own reason for picking names!!
We just went with names that felt right with each one. However, when I was pregnant with DD3, we realised that the other two's first middle name started with the same letter, so we gave DD3 an a name as well.
To me it has to have a family connection.
DD1 is Joan, that is my Nana's name, DH Great Grandmothers name and his sisters middle name so made both sides of the family happy. DD1 hates it though and if we say it she tells us she does not want to be Joan anymore. Her choice to change it when she is old enough if she wants but I am sure she when she understands why she has it she will love it.
DD2 is Lee, that is also my middle name and my only uncles name (but spelt different) who passed away 6 years ago. It just happened to sound fantastic with her first name too.
This baby we don't know the gender but we know that if it is a girl the middle name will be Marie (Goes nicely with first name we have picked) after DH's grandmother who passed away late last year while he was overseas. If it is a boy the middle name will be Mark or Anthony after my fathers first and middle names, just depends on what first name we go with.
I find middle names the easiest part of choosing a name for a baby.
We chose grandparents names, DD11 has my middle name which is my mum's name.
Regards,
Dianne
Both of my kids middle names are names I really loved but didn't use as a first name due to different reasons..
DS1 - The sound of it is too similar to surname so it fits nicely in the middle.
DS2 - I love the name but didn't want it shortened for my kid like a lot of people do so when it's in the middle it's the full name no short versions.
