I think I broke my body

    Hi guys,

I'm on the pill at the moment, have been for the past 5 years. I always play around with my cycle, pushing off my period until it's a more convenient time etc, or sometimes skipping it completely. Before I went on the pill I used to O around day 18, and have a 30 or 31 day cycle. Normally I find once I stop taking the pill & take the sugar tablets it can take up to 5 days for my period to come. Anyway, I stopped taking the pill end of Jan to get my period, it took 5 days or so and when it did come it only lasted for 1 day. Since then I haven't taken the pill at all (haven't had sex either), as I was having an operation and I thought I would use it as a chance to re-set my body and from here on in try to take the sugar pills when my body wanted to have a period. It's coming up for 50 odd days without a period.

Did a home pregnancy test (just in case), but that was neg. My GP sent me for a blood test today just to make sure, but we are both pretty sure I'm not as I normally get bad MS straight away, and I haven't had anything out of the ordinary. She did say that it sometimes takes people 6 months to get normal periods happening again. I plan on going back on the pill and doing it properly, but I want to start taking it from the first day of my period so I know where my body is at - if that ever happens again.

This kind of stuff never happened to me before, I always had very regular period (although they only ever lasted for 3-4 days), and with DS I got pregnant first cycle off the pill, and DD 2nd period off the minipill.

Did I break my body?? Is it fixable?? We want to try for a baby next year, and I would like to have sex sometime again in my life, which I can't do without being on the pill.

Yael - Chris fixed my cycle with acupuncture, was working next cycle! You can regulate it. Im not a huge pill fan any more. Have you thought about natural fertility management? Doesnt make sense taking hormone all month round to prevent pregnancy which could happen over 5 days only.

I wouldn't think it'd be the *way* you used your pill as much as just the pill itself messing with your cycle. Don't they say it can take a year or more for your body to sort itself out after coming off the pill (in terms of trying to fall pregnant)? Do you have any alternative contraception you can use instead of the pill until you know what's going on? (Cause you know, abstinence is probably the most disappointing form of contraception ever )

At the moment we are using abstinence (much to my husbands dismay), but I'm hoping it will come back soon.. It's just weird I've never had a problem getting pregnant coming off the pill before, and now I can't even get my period. Maybe I'm just getting older and things change? I got pregnant at 23 and 25, now I'm 31.

Kelly - I'm currently on medication that isn't safe to be on whilst pregnant, so I'm not comfortable using natural methods, just too bigger risk to the baby if I stuff it up (I know the pill has a 1% failure rate, but it's the closest other than abstinence that I will get). Once I'm off the medication then I will stop the pill and then we will just see what happens..

I totally agree that things change. My cycle has changed a lot since having kids, but maybe it's just the getting older thing after all. Also, things happen differently at different times - look at secondary infertility... what's with that? It's a bit of a spinout that someone could get pregnant easily the first time but not again...
Not to get pushy (because of course it's your choice) but barriers are pretty efficient contraception.

For religious reasons we can't use barrier protection, but thanks for the suggestion.

It's OK, I've found the perfect solution to not getting your period - post a thread on BB complaining about it, and that night you will for sure get it!! It's going to be pretty heavy I think (at the back of my mind I wonder if I had a m/c?? I guess the blood test results will show higher HCG and then I'll know), but at least I got it. Now I'll be diligent about making sure I have 30 day cycles, and hopefully that will keep my body more or less where it needs to be, and then next year hopefully we can get pregnant again.

I did the same thing when I was overdue with DD, posted a thread complaining about no labour on the horizon, and then 2 hours later started with contractions, so that's my advice, if you want something to happen, complain on BB about it, and then it will happen!

    Thanks everyone
