    Question WWYD in my situation

    hi ladies,

i'm on a contract year by year, ends next week. i know they really want to keep me. anyway... i'm currently 5w2d pregnant. by the time my new contract will be signed & approved i will be about 11 weeks, then will start at around 12.5 weeks.

we fell pregnant last year & announced to family, work, friends etc early, but sadly we m/c. this time around will be different. i don't want to tell them now because A) i'm so early & i couldn't face another loss with work knowing. B) they might not re-contract me due to being pregnant (even though that's not right).

is it going to look very strange that i get re-contracted, 2 weeks later i announce i'm pregnant....?? but i just can't bring myself to announce it yet. i couldn't deal with the pity, the strange conversations etc (IF) something did go wrong. can't i just be honest with them & apologise that i kept it from them but it's just what i felt i needed to do??

what would you ladies do in my situation? please be honest

Honestly, I'd just sign it and then announce it when you're ready. If you want you could say you didn't find out til you were a few months along or you could just say you didn't want to tell them earlier. You're completely within your rights to sign the new contract, pregnant or not. Besides, if I were you I'd be wanting to save as much money before bubs arrives as possible, so I wouldn't want to be giving up my job!

EDIT: also, from a PPL side of things, you need to have worked for at least 10 months before bubs is born so you don't want to be out of work and possibly miss out on that payment!

I'd definitely re-sign the contract. Like you said they cant and shouldn't discriminate because of pregnancy. If u resign then ur entitled to paid parental leave as well. I can understand your reasons for feeling a little guilty resigning know that u might have to leave anyway, but realistically if they knew u were pregnant this yr but sadly miscarried then you would think theyd assume ud be wanting to again sooner or later? Go for it! Worry about urself, not them. And congrats & good luck for the rest of ur pregnancy

I dont know about the situation at your work, but if they have to find someone to replace you, it probably won't matter too much whether you've signed the new contract or not. Plus you'll presumably be there for at least half of your contract anyway, its not like you're leaving in a month!
You could always hold off an extra week on the announcement if it feels strange to you? I'm pretty paranoid about doing "the right thing" and I think you're fine!

Sign it, you have a while before you need to tell them and as pp's have said you would be working for at least half the contract anyway.

This is what I did. As it turns out my contract has now been terminated effective my mat leave date but I'm being replaced by a computer system in march/April so if I wasnt preg I would be terminated then anyway

Sign the contract. Legally you're not required to advise your employer until the point in time that is specified in their mat leave policies (usually a month or two before you start leave, unless you need modifications to your work before then). So check the policy that applies to you as it may ease your mind.

In my experience staff are usually much much more loyal than employers. If the shoe was on the other foot & the company was thinking of terminating your position you can bet they would leave it until the very last moment before advising you. And if you're feeling vulnerable at work, consider joining the relevant union where you can get advice & support re issues like these.
