Starting BCP

My periods are so over the place since DD3 arrived, do my gp has put me on the pill.
What I'm wondering is, I know your meant to take day 1 on first day of AF, but what happens if you take it at a different time?
Will it delay when AF comes next?

I think from memory (and it's quite some years) that yes it will delay AF
