Company 1 - charges $1250 to move everything. Insurance is extra.
Company 2 - charges $1300 to move everything. Insurance is included. They are from out of town and charge travel fees so may be slightly more on the day.
Husband of a work colleague who move people in their spare time. Will charge half of Company one ($725), no insurance available.
Ourselves - $400-$500 truck hire, plus whatever it costs to bribe some mates. No insurance available.
Which would you choose to move? We're not intending to move for quite some time after this.
We moved house in December last year, we went with professional movers and it cost us a little over $1200 for the entire day. It was an hourly rate and because we had to get packed up and out in time for settlement, they also had to charge us for the downtime in between waiting for the new place to settle.
Personally I would always go with the pros (not that I am planning on moving ever again!). We had 3 guys with one truck, they were so quick, much faster than we would have been. When we got to the new place I kind of expected them to just put everything in the main room and we ferry it around the house. But they made sure all furniture and boxes were put into the right room and it was all done so quickly! This way we were able to do all those little things that need to be done, plus we could easily keep an eye on the kids.
I have to agree with Hestia, We went with the Pro's too. We packed the boxes but they moved it all.
2 Guys and 1 truck and we were moved in 5 hours with furniture and boxes in the right rooms. Our cost about $800 no insurance and it was well worth every cent. If I ever move again I will definitely hire people to do it for us again.
We moved ourselves when we moved 1 hour away. DH hired a truck and him and his brother got all the big stuff moved in one day and then we did a few car trips with smaller stuff. For us we chose to move ourselves as it was a lot of money saved. But we re-furnished the current house so we didn't have the amount of furniture that we do now. Whilst I would be inclined to move yourselves and save the money in moving costs it depends on how much stuff you have and the distance you are moving
If I had the choice and the money I'd go the pros.
We have done plenty of moves ourselves (a few years ago we had had 5 moves in 5 years) and the one where they came and packed, uplifted, down lifted and unpacked was by far the easiest.
It takes me months to manage to pack boxes myself. It took them under a day and absolutely nothing was packed to start with.
Go with pros I've never had insurance I guess it depends on what you have to move.
We have done both and definitely don't recommend the DIY, it's stressful enough moving without then being physically exhausted after lifting stuff all day
When we moved we paid for packing and moving as well as a finishing service and insurance. Mind you this was interstate. And I have anxiety towards moving. So if you can afford it. Do it that way. And do look for the finishing service. A couple of hundred dollars extra. And I had my bed made, kitchen and bathrooms all setup and ready to go so we could unpack the rest at our leisure.
We've always moved ourselves, for he cost of $200 for a truck, and $100 in fish'n'chips and beers (for mates).
Never had any significant dramas, but it's always been on a shoestring ...
If the money wasn't a big deal, I'd get the professionals in, and (if the move wasn't covered by my home & contents insurance) Id do it with insurance.
If the money was an issue, I'd get the truck, and do it ourselves, with as many mates as we could feed.
We're planning on moving states this coming summer and I'm still debating if we're going to go with the pros or save money and just rent a truck and do it ourselfs with two little ones though I think the smarter choice is going to be the pros ..
I think we will be using the Semi Professionals. No insurance (have to check my home and contents) but the alternative was really moving ourselves. So we are really only paying a couple of hundred for the man power when you consider truck hire. Thanks for the replies.
