Baby Weight Estimation - how accurate was yours?

Hi Ladies,

Just needing a bit of feedback with your experiences of the ultrasound prediction of your babys birth weight and the actual result.

Just had an appointment with my Ob who estimates that Bubs is already at 7.5pound and she's talking high possibility of c-section cause I'm quite a petite size. I feel dissappointed cause I really want a natural birth and know that I still have every capability of delivering naturally regardless of size, and also that the ultrasounds are just an estimate. But i'm still feeling a bit dejected about the whole thing.

So, how big were they saying your baby was going to be, and how big did it really end up being?

Would love to hear feedback on this.

They are all about the theatre aren't they?

Prediction scans are highly inaccurate - often lower or higher than predicted size. I'm sure there'll be many people that will come in here and reinforce the idea of not listening to your Ob so I'll just say

Your body will not make a baby that you cannot birth!

I was told that my baby was "above average" size and would probably be quite a big baby. He weighed 7pounds 3oz. I have heard so many stories of women being told the that their baby was going to be big and they have not been born big at all.

i was told id be lucky if sophie was 6lb as my bump was so compact, she ws 7lb5oz!

I had a scan at 37 weeks and was told bub's size was in the 95th percentile (so up the high end of normal). She was born a week later 3410gms (7lb8oz). I has expecting at least an 8.5 pounder

I was told "bigger than average" so was expecting 8lb or more..... she came out at 6lb 7oz!!!! The OB said "hmmm more petite than I anticipated"

I was given a prediction of 3.2kg (just over 7lb) for my DD and she was 4.485kg (9lb 14oz) when she was born. HUUUGE difference there.

I was told DS2 would be around 8 1/2 lb. He was 6 1/2 lb.

I was told 9 1/4 lbs 3 days later he was born at 8lbs 12.5oz so very close

Honestly i think they have no idea. I was sent for a size scan at 37 weeks and he said bubs was going to be big and ob put on my hospital admission card to watch baby's shoulders and also told me i had a risk of having a c section. Hamish was 8'4 and born natural with no difficulty delivering shoulders. Good Luck and dont stress.

We had a scan at 37 wks that indicated she weighed about 6 1/2 lbs then. She was born two weeks later (by c/s, but nothing to do with the weight!) and weighed a tiny 5 lbs 10 oz. My ob had predicted about 6 lbs something so they were all wrong. Even family history was no help, no one in my family seems to have had a baby that small at full term!

The u/s was the MOST wrong though!

oh and btw....i birthed him vaginally and i'm not a big girl (165cms) and i am absolutely fine

pff theyre just guessing, just as everyone looking at your bump. I asked my dr and midwives how big they thought my baby was going to be... Some wouldnt tell me and others said that the baby was average. How the hell do i know what average is? My ds was a vaginal birth- resulting in a 8lb7oz boy. I had to ask what he weighed in lb/oz coz they told me 3820g.

My sister was told by many, including ultrasound to expect a massive baby. She was just over 6 pound!! At the same time I was told to expect quite a small bub, and my son came in at 8p 10oz!!! My biggest so far!! Please pay no attention hon, you'll be fine!!

I was told the day before Alexa was born she was about 3lb 5oz... when she was born the next day she was 3lb 11oz ... quite a big difference for a small baby....

I was told I was having a big bub- about 4kg+. She was born a very average 3.6kgs, but was quite tall at 55cm long which was why everyone thought she was going to be huge.

I didn't have the size guessed via ultrasound, but the midwife did take a punt by feel and she was guessing around 7 pound but he was in fact a teeny 5 pound 12!

My scan (to check for placental function but the technician did a measurement anyway) said DD was 7lbs14. She was 7lbs14.5 BUT that means she only gained 0.5oz in the 6 days between the scan and her birth when I put on 1.5kg!!! It is seriously a load of crap. When they get it right it was luck, pure and simple - it's like guessing how many sweeties in the big jar, even if you got good enough to be right within a tolerance of 50 either side of the true number, you wouldn't stake your life on it, let alone someone else's!
