    4mth old losing weight

    Hi All,

My DD is turning 4mths tomorrow and in the last week she has not drank as much as she use to.

For about a month prior she use to drink 200mls x 6 to 7 times in a 24hr slot. Now in the last two weeks she refuses to drink, when she does she drinks only about 100mls and moves her hands trying to pull hte bottle out. ONce a day she would finish the 200ml bottle.

She has lost weight too (approx 300g since last weighed 2 weeks ago) and her chubby cheeks are gone =(

She seems to also be more sooky, wanting me to carry her more and then she's happy.

Is she sick? She doesnt seem to complain like she was sick (ie tummy hurts or headache)

    Thanks in advance!

One possibility is she is going through a growth spurt and is just not needing as much milk atm after storing up the energy from the milk in the previous month. Has she got any longer? This happened to my DS but he was about 5 months old. Scared me witless I might add as he went from feeding every 2-3 hours to every 4 or so and the volume of milk he went through dropped quite a bit as well.

Also there seems to be a developmental thing around 4 months (from personal experience and talking to friends with babies) where babies seem to suddenly be more aware of their general surroundings. This could be a little discomforting for her and she just needs the extra reassurance from her mummy. Again, DS went through this at about 3 and a half to 4 months old.

I think the 3-5 months were the most nerve racking as so much seemed to be happening. Thanks to my sister, mum and nan, I had a lot of advice which helped heaps. I couldn't have coped without them.

If you are in any way concerned that she is sick, take her to your GP. Better safe than sorry!!

I would get her checked out. 300g is a fair bit to lose, and the fact that she's unhappy as well tells you something may not be right.

A growth spurt is one thing, but losing weight is another, she's still too little not to be concerned about that.

I hope she's back to her happy self very soon

Yep - take her to the doctor. I htink until they are 12 months old you should always go to the doctor if anything unusual happens, and losing that much weight at this age is unusual. Even for your own piece of mind I'd go too.

Definately take her to the doctor. 300g is a lot to lose in 2 weeks.

Yep - I'd definitely be off to the dr. She might not be complaining because she mightn't have the energy. That's a fair bit of weight to lose in 2 weeks.

    Hope all is well *hugs*
