I'm about to go and purchase a few final items before bub arrives. One of the items i need is a steriliser.. I've not set my mind on a feeding choice as I figure baby will decide that for me so the idea behind the steriliser is a) if I can breastfeed still need to sterilise dummies and breast pump/accessories and obviously eventually bottles once I finish BF'ing or b) if i have to bottle feed, will need to sterilise bottles.
I was looking at the Avent Electric Steriliser however a midwife told me the avent bottles cause alot of wind in babies however that the steriliser was good but now i'm not sure what to do.
I guess I'm just after feedback on sterilisers people have used and what was good/bad about them. Thanks.
We have a Avent microwave steriliser. Itas great, however i dont recomend it unless your going to use avent bottles, and i dont reccomend avent bottles because they cause the milk to spill from the baby's mouth coz the teats are so wide.
Id suggest a microwave steriliser seeings as your unsure when and how often you will use it, you dont really want to go spending a huge amount on a electric one only to find you use it only for dummies and a breast pump.
I have an Avent microwave steriliser. It was given to me with about 8 Avent bottles.
It only really fits 3 or 4 bottles in it at a time, but it's quick & easy.
I just use the milton tablets for dummies & stuff. Or just boil them for 5 minutes.
I am the opposite to Meg and your midwife and highly recommend Avent bottles. Both my DD got bad wind and colic from other bottles...but Avent was the only one that prevent all our problems and near had teat problems.
I got a $15 Target Brand (Baby love) microwave steraliser, which its great... It fits various sized bottles, so what ever brand you use, fits. I use it for the breast pump atm, and when I got it, I thought, if I switched to formula feeding I could upgrade to an electric steraliser.

I have the same one as Ruf -its great fits all sorts of stuff even now that she only has one bottle a day but I do her sippy cups etc....
Just keep in mind with dummies that they shouldn't be microwave sterilised as the heat goes too high for them and can cause the rubber to wear out quicker than it should which is dangerous. I found that a a hot kettle boiled and then poured over them in a bowl was fine to sterilise.
Same as ruf and tan for me - I picked up a Target BabyLove microwave steriliser for half price on sale, only cost me $12.45 I think. I used it for my breast pump, although current recommendations are now that a breast pump merely needs to be rinsed after every use in cold water and washed once a day, either on the top row of the dishwasher or in hot soapy water. Because it only comes in contact with breastmilk it is not prone to any bacteria (unlike bottles, which also come in contact with the baby's mouth - I believe, but check with the ABA on that one!).
I wouldn't buy an expensive one unless you find you bottle feed and need it after bubs is born.
We have the microwave Avent one - which we used for DS and was fine - we used both the avent bottles and the pidgeon ones. They are really only designed for avent ones though, but some people like them, some people don't - same as babies. DS was fine with any type of bottle, but I have found with DD she has problems attaching to a teat anyway, and so we have already found out that the pidgeon ones are best for her.
We are going to buy an electric steraliser anyway - so I will have my microwave Avent one to giveaway if you are interested? (together with bottles - cos I don't like the Avent ones - not for the reason Meg said though - it never leaked around his mouth - leaked whilst shaking for us.. )
You don't need to sterilise bottles, pump etc for bfing. The current medical advice is to rinse in cold water after use, and wash in warm, soapy water once a day or so. I am not 100% sure but I think strerilisng might not be necessary for ff either. I would probably save the money on a steriliser and boil the dummies if you use them.
I've been told exactly what MR said, however I have the Avent electric and I love it. It fits all sorts of bottles - not just avent. Takes 6 minutes and when there's virusy bugs around made me feel better about her dummies ect.
We bought an avent electric one, online from chemist warehouse along with the bottle warmer for roughly the same price we found just the steriliser in the shops.
Quite happy with the both
