I posted this question in the feeding section a little while ago but though having it here in the reflux section might get a few more replies.
DD has been on AR formula for the past few weeks.
Im having a lot of trouble with teats. She uses Avent bottles. Have tried using the normal teats, even making the holes bigger with a needle and making additional holes. She just fusses and gets frustraited shes not getting enough. Ive also bought the Variable flow teats for thicker formula and she just spills it everywhere. They do say 3+ months on them so maybe she'll catch up and get better with them over the next month or so (being shes only 2 months now).. but the variable flow ones are the only ones i can get the milk into her with.. even though half way through she starts fussing on them too.
Im just wondering what teats everyone uses for the thicker formula??
I'm having the same problem with my DD. I did speak to a chemist and she suggested a special teat for reflux formula that has what can only be described as a cross cut (as opposed to a hole) in the teat (not sure if they are the variable teats you are talking about). It should fit the avent bottles.
I haven't tried it yet as we only have the Tommee Tippee closer to nature ones and I don't want to have to go and buy all new bottles.
Thanks pink!
Yeh we just stuck to the Avent Variable flow teats which have a slit rather than the holes, and shes managed to catch up with the flow and doesnt spill too much now.
Not sure about the TT ones.. maybe you can email them or check their site to see if they do a teat suitable for thicker formula?
TBH all the wide neck bottles are just crap, they really are (and I've been using bottles for a loooong time). For the AR formula, I use the regular 'old fashioned' teats in the 18mths size and have not had a problem with them, even from birth. They were the only ones that would let it flow through properly.
We needed to use the anti-diarrhoea formula (and had always used the Closer To nature Bottles but found the thicker formula wouldn't flow) so then we got a pack of 3 old fashioned style bottles from Woolworths - they cost $4.88 for 3 bottles - no kidding ( a big difference to almost twenty dollars for 2 Tommee Tippee ones) and they worked a treat! Not sure of the brand name but it has "Wishes" in it... might be "Small Wishes" or something like that. Anyway, they're the only ones you'll see at Woollies where you can get 3 for under 5 bucks!
Hope that helps!
Good luck.

Hi
I have been using AR formula with the Tommee Tippee closer to nature bottles with a number two teat. To start off with our bottles used to get blocked, as when you first shake the bottle its like a thick shake, but now i pre shake my bottles as the formula can be pre made and kept for 24hrs in the fridge.
I only have one bottle a time pre mixed, so as im heating up one bottle, im getting the next one ready with formula and placing it back in the fridge. This gives it 3-4hrs to settle and becomes just like a normal mix (still a bit thicker). We have had no trouble since we have been doing this and it flows well trough the number 2 teat.
Hope this helps you a bit
