    Amelia or Emelia

    Hi all,
We have just found out that we are expecting a girl!

We really like the name Amelia/Emelia, but not sure how we should spell it.

DH likes Emelia, as he could call her Em for short, but both of us are a little concerned that she will spend her whole life having to spell her name to people.

So what spelling would you choose??

    TIA

Meg, gorgeous name and congrats again!! You will definitely be spelling it all the time if you go the E way. I prefer Amelia, but saying that you go for what you like best. People will get used to the spelling! xo

I personally prefer the name Amelia with the nicknames Amy () or Millie. I think it looks prettier and it's spelt how it sounds.

It's a gorgeous name either way!

    Thanks WM,
Amysarah - I LOVE the name Amy, but I named my sister Amy when she was born, and I think DH thinks if we go with the A version I will jsut call her Amy like my sis. He says i already got to name one Amy, so don't get to name another the same!!

I'd go with either Amelia or Emilia - Emelia is a bit of a hybrid and I prefer traditional spellings. Amelia is English; Emilia Italian. If you go for Emilia she will probably have to spell it, but all you have to say is 'it's italian for emily' and i'm sure a lot of people will get it. I think Em/Emmy are really nice nicknames.

    I vote Emilia!!

well i like Emelia (not biased or anything)

i had picked out Amelia and DF wanted Emelia cos he liked that he could shorten it to Em and we liked the look of it better and we get alot of comments on how much pretty it looks spelt with an E!

each to their own i guess but most names these days u have to spell to ppl even if its a plain simple name!

I reckon go with Emelia too! I think it looks pretty. And I agree with the PP - these days there are so many different spellings for names, it's not unusual to have to spell your name for people regardless if it's a traditional spelling or not. My name (Amy) gets spelt all different ways too! Some people spell it Amie or Aimee... And you'd think it'd be simple, but nope It's no biggie to have to spell your name for people I love Em for short

I agree with Blanche on the name spelling thing - my name is three letters and I always get asked "Is that spelt Aimee or Amy?"

Go with what you both love. If you like Em for a nn then Emelia is perfect!

    A vote for Emelia here
Its how you pronounce it too - if you say "uh-melia" it sounds like it starts with an "A" if you say "eh-melia" it sounds like it starts with an "E"!!

LOL Amy - frustrating isn't it? My best mate is Amie, so that's probably why people spell my name wrong - mutual friends who can't remember which one of us is which
