curiousity is getting the better of me

what is your opinion on names that relate to the time a baby is born?

    April
    May
    June
    Summer
    Autumn
    Ruby (july baby)
    Holly (at Christmas)
Sunday (gotta get celebs in here somewhere!)

one of my cousins, a few years ago, had a little girl and named her Autumn - and because she was born in Autumn, there was HEAPS of comments. i'm not close to the cousin (family estrangement) so i don't know what was said to her directly, but down here, there were a lot of comments about lack of originality etc. it's something i have been thinking about. Amy's Maybell thread just triggered the thought again!

    so what is your opinion?

I really love the names (i.e. Autumn, Winter, Summer, May etc). But I don't think I would deliberatly choose one according to the season/month my baby was born. It's more that I actually like the names! My cousin named her baby Summer she she was born in July!

I quite like some of the names you mentioned but I wouldn't use them because of the direct connection...as in May - May baby, Holly born at Christmas.

It wouldn't bother me that others did...just not for me!!!

i love the names too, i just can't get past the association of month/time of birth and the name being related. as i just mentioned in another thread, my birth month is May, so it is possible we'd use a May related name - but i couldn't do it if bubs was born in May. DH's birthday is in July - so Ruby is something we've contemplated - but again, if we had a girl in July, i wouldn't be able to use it!

i guess birth flowers are different cos you don't associate with them so much - but the month/birthstone thing (or season really) just weirds me out a bit!

Using the example of "Ruby May" - it's gorgeous and would be so so so sweet on a baby girl - but I wouldn't use it if my baby was born in May as everyone would think it was an association with that month. If she was born in June then it would be a different story. So I agree with you on that one.

At one stage I LOVED the name Winter Rose but threw it in the bin for two reasons...

    1) It's too literal
    2) If we had a winter baby the name would be out anyway!

I think Winter would be a difficult one - if you had an Autumn bub, it would be said you conceived in Winter, Winter bub - well obvious, Summer bub - you'd cop comments about doing the exact opposite of when bub was born

    sometimes you can't win!

there's not a name on that first post that i don't like - it's just so restrictive when you have to take into account the opinions of the name being associated to baby's DOB when really it's related to something else completely!

I agree and it sucks! I guess it comes with any name that has a literal meaning. My cousin wants to name her second baby, if she has a girl (due in March) Indigo Violet. They are both colours from the rainbow! But they hadn't even thought of the colours - they just love the names.

I guess it comes down to personal choice and being able to deal with negative comments. I don't think anyone can win when it comes to naming a baby - there will always be someone out there with something nasty to say!

I have always thought that a christmas baby girl called Holly/Hollie/Hollye would be sweet!!

i would look at Indigo as a color, Violet as a flower - so same name different interpretation! but i guess that comes from being a bit of a gardener that likes flower names! i wouldn't use them together, but that's personal choice. you may find that your cousin is thinking of violet as a flower more than a color...

I hope she doesn't use Violet because I want to use it when it's my turn!!!

I like the name Indigo... she will nickname her "Indie" which is so so so cute!

But I get what you mean - I think of one as a colour and one as a flower too.

would depend on how close you are to your cousin as to whether she'd take offence (or put you off using it!) - we havent eliminated any names based on my family - but all names that we can directly like to DH's family have been cut off any list we have!

only another ooh 30 weeks or so Amy! two BB-ites know boys name, and one knows girl. and that's only cos we're really good friends and it was a case of sharing so that names didn't get "stolen" inadvertantly!

we've had two girl and two boy names (with middle names) picked for at least two years

nothing has made us change our minds - we both love them, both have very similar tastes... so it's just a case now of waiting for the Gremlin to arrive so that we can name it.

and then you will have one set in stone Amy and change it to another when you see the baby for the first time...lol

Interesting thoughts here - if Miss M was a boy - we were tossing up the middle name of August - because it was my grandfather's middle name. So because she was born in August, if she had been a boy - it might have turned me off using it IYKWIM??

    Lucky bubs was a girl
