How much does an EpiPen hurt?

Well, I'm the one to ask, because last week I gave myself one. I was demonstrating its use to some other staff, and somehow an expired pen had been mixed up with the trainers, which I had picked up to use. I pulled off the grey cap, pushed the black end toward my thigh with mild force, heard the click, then said "Whoops. That's not a trainer." and pulled it out.
(It had no effect because it was a juniour dose, expired, and I didn't keep the needle in for the requisite 10 seconds)
It hurts a bit. Once the needle is in, you don't really feel it, as long as you are still. The bruise I got was tiny, and I bruise really easily. My biggest piece of advice, if you ever have to give one - and I really really hope you don't! - is this:
    1) it hurts less if you stay still - tell the patient this.
    2) rub like crazy after you take it out, because it really helps.
    3) don't bother pulling pants down, unless they are like ski pants or something, because it went so easily through mine.

Just a little story I thought I would share with you interested parties!

Oh no you poor thing! That is good to know though because we have training frequently as teachers for kids who have nut allergies! They have said to go through pants etc so it's nice to know it works - although Im sorry you had to be the guinea pig!

I just hope we never, ever have to use ours - My son has severe nut allergy and we have EpiPens at school, home and after school care. I wondered how much it would hurt, but in reality after the severe reaction he had last Christmas in which the only thing that really saved him was vomiting - he was so scared I don't think he would care how much it hurt for 10 seconds - as long as he could breathe. That's what I would need to focus on too.

Pray we never have to use it.

Tan - as a teacher - what happens when the allergic kid goes on excursions - are their Epipens carried in a first aid kit or similar? This question only dawned on me last week when they were going out ... dumb I know ...

My first thought was that if someone really needs it, they probably wouldnt' notice if it hurt or not!! Not a nice suprise for you though!!
We have an epi pen for DD2 and I too hope I never have to use it.
SB, interesting to know how easily it went through lyour clothes. Good to know xoxo
